Hi All! I'm not much of a gardener, but I try. We are both elderly, my wife has MS, and I have parkinsons. I am also very deaf, and my sight is not so good. Apart from that we manage. In 2014, we downsized our home, as I could not manage the garden. My son built raised beds for veg, which my wife can manage. Until this year the new garden was not very colourful. It has two red-Robin shrubs, a rhododendron, and an azailia. My son bought me some salvia plants, and I bought some bizzie lizzie's off e-Bay, and all our flowering nicely. My real difficulty, is telling the difference between flowers and weeds.
Welcome to the forum you two. The nice thing about gardening is that mistakes are always repairable. If you accidentally kill a plant, you can always try again and plant another. I always recommend sunflowers as they grow fast and are easy to see and care for, are great for birds and bees and are a real looker. And if they don't work out you can try again.
Welcome to the forum John. You are doing well given your medical situation. We can help identify weeds, are you able to take photos of them? Showing the size, leaves and flowers if any. Post them in the Identification forum area. If you get stuck just ask and I will point the way.
Thanks Black Dog. We havn't grown any this year, just forgotten as been a bit busy. Thanks JWK. It's a bit slow going sometimes, so patience is needed. I have “Plant Net” on my phone, which comes in handy if you believe the answers. Thanks JR. Seems a nice friendly place.
Welcome to Gardeners Corner John. It's good to hear that you and your wife can still manage and enjoy your garden, despite your health problems.
Hi sheal. Thanks for the welcome. We do try, although we do sometimes have some help from our two sons.
Hello @John Disdle and Mrs D. Weeds...flowers ,I struggle with them too , so long as they're pretty and not too invasive..not too worried about them.
Hi Upsydaisy. I agree that some weeds are pretty, which makes it more difficult to know the difference. We have some gravel under our front windows, and there is a weed with red leaves, and little yellow flowers. I looked it up, and it's stink Weed. I can't smell it, but it makes a nice carpet, so it's staying. We also have poppies in various colours, that pop up everywhere. As long as they don't smother my flowers, I leave them alone.
Thanks for the warning Upsydaisy. It looks like it, but it's ok where it is. It's not spreading very fast.
