If you are exempt from wearing a mask you may also not be able to wear a face shield - I know, I am that person. Anything that impedes airflow in or out has a significant effect on me, not only there and then but also stuffs me for hours later. I may have shifty looking eyes to some folk, I certainly have at least one wonky one and a half knackered face thanks to the two strokes - - I really thought we lived in a society that treated disabled people with a bit more respect rather than making a judgement and deciding they are an outcast because of the way they look.

However, you have nicely summed up my problem with a lot of this - exemptions and so on can be put in place, but there is always someone who wants to argue the toss and call you a liar. Life is challenging enough for someone who is disabled without adding that on as well.

For clarity, the first time I went into the local Tesco - March this year from memory - I was actually very anxious - not because I was worried about catching anything, but more that someone would say something and I would then respond in words of one syllable.

I've done my bit - I've more or less hidden myself away for 16 months so far and am continuing to do so, but I am sure as hell not going to apologise for going to Tesco when I need something at the time I need it.

I had an e-mail from a long-term ex-colleague since 1990 who comes here every year. We worked at Hoselock, me in Personnel, he in IT. Booked for August but has cancelled due to uncertainties. Son got Covid at Euro 2020 and passed it on to wife and two kids.

People should not be made to feel bad if they are not wearing a mask, I blame the way this lot was brought in, presumably worked out by government and scientists, that the best way to get people to wear them, way back last year, was to tell everyone they were useless for yourself but protected the rest of mankind.

Underhand coercion to make you feel bad if you didn't comply and also to get the rest of the public to police it.

As I said earlier, if you wish to continue wearing one, get a medical grade one.

Having said that, I still think there is some reason to wear one on public transport, but if they are not wearing them in nightclubs:biggrin: is there really any point.

Yes we have to make allowances for all sorts of people, like me with a short term memory.

We had a short Hotel break the week before last whilst restrictions were in place. We ate in restaurants for the first time since Lockdown #1, it is strange adjusting. I went straight to the bar to order drinks & food and was told courteously "it's table service only", I should have know that. Then we looked around to check that everyone else was behaving themselves (really we shouldn't). We were served by a young girl without a mask wearing a big label saying she was exempt, fair enough. We had masks on but allowed to take them off to eat. Then horrors, some folk came in not wearing masks and sat at a table. Then I went to the loo, when I came back Mrs JWK pointed out I'd forgotten to wear my mask.

To be honest it's all a bit sad watching and judging people and they are probably doing the same to us, it's only human nature. After a couple of days we started to relax when amongst other people and adjust to our new found freedom. It will still take me a some time to get back into the same mental state of pre-covid.

@JWK, I think the fact you were served by a girl who was exempt kind of makes a mockery of the whole thing.
It's like saying, its ok if she passes covid on to you because she is exempt, but you mustn't pass it on to her.

The further you look into what has been going on the dafter it all seems to be.
I sometimes think Boris and the two book ends are going to appear on the telly one night and tell us all it was just some kind of hoax.:roflol:
Before anyone takes that seriously, it is a joke.

Masks are little more than comfort blankets, not least as the ones that the public are using are not medical grade or micron filtered; furthermore they will very often spend a week being whipped in and out of a pocket or a handbag before the user decides they better whack it through the washing machine and/or they are often worn in such a way that they slip down below people's nose (often without them even noticing) which completely negates any effectiveness.

They would potentially be effective if you had a cough, were sneezing or had a runny nose - you know, symptoms that would suggest you may be infectious and should maybe get a test and stay away from others. The problem there of course is that we then enter the realms of people isolating or being off work every time they have a cold or bad hayfever symptoms.

Masks themselves carry risks - the obvious one being that they harbour bacteria which you will then be breathing back in. The other is to spectacle wearers - I know of one lady who had her glasses steam up just as she got up out of her seat at the very rear of a bus where there is quite a high step; she missed her footing, went down and badly broke her leg to the point she had to undergo an operation and have it pinned.

Regarding nightclubs, @pete has hit the nail on the head - a considerable number of the people in there are not really there for the dancing.... especially as they are generally all in the 18-24 age group; we all know that the dancing is essentially the human equivalent of a mating ritual. When they leave that club (and possibly in it!) they will almost certainly be an awful lot closer than any mask would cope with.

This is exactly what I thought 18 months ago. They also give the impression that the govt is doing its job by persuading us to wear them. That and religious hand washing make us feel we are doing our bit.

Driving down the main street this morning, I noticed a few people without masks, and my brow furrowed slightly, one lady was wearing her mask on her elbow while chatting with her friend, who was masked and one foot distant.
Pulling onto the pavement in the plaza, I got the stack truck out of the back of the car and wheeled it over to my agent´s office, where a large parcel was waiting for me. My new, shiny red tool cabinet, which will enable me to sort out my tools at last, and create order in the workshop.
Such was my excitement that it was not until I had the load onboard and was driving off, that I realised I had carried out the complete operation sans mask.
Nobody had furrowed their brows as I passed, my agent seemed not to notice, and the Guardia Civil were busy elsewhere.
I realise that masks are often of very limited benefit, and often no, or even negative benefit, my main reason for wearing a mask (or attempting to), is solidarity with the others who are experiencing the current hysteria. My main regret about this morning´s lapse was not remotely about the virus and my safety, it is a feeling that I appeared to be arrogant and let the side down.

We don't have to wear masks outdoors unless we cannot distance. However, the other day going through our nearest town one elderly lady was walking along wearing a mask ... with not a soul in sight!

That's been going on all the time over here.
People have been traumatised into thinking they could die at any moment.

Then they wonder why mental health has gone down the pan.

It reminds me of something I once read, during ww2 they organised a collection of old saucepans from all over the country, they also cut down all the railings.
Saucepans were to make Spitfires and the railings were for tanks.

Apparently it was all dumped, but it rallied the population and they all thought they were doing their bit.

A ping only says you have been close to someone who has tested positive, for a certain amount of time.
It doesn't mean you have it.

Its just another stupid idea that cost billions and doesn't help the situation.

I think it´s all based on where your phone has been, and who got near it, rather than just your personal whereabouts. If you leave it in a locker while you are in the gym, and someone infected walks past it, you´ll get pinged. If the guy in the hotel room next door has the virus, you´ll get pinged as well. Luddites like me, too dumb for a smartphone, who use an old fashioned mobile, can wander around spreading the virus like billy-o without a care in the world, or fear of being pinged.
The Ping System has the appearance of a mathematical approach to shutting a country down, and whether or not that is a sensible idea in the present circumstances, it seems to work counter to Boris´s passionate support of the pubs, coffee bars and night clubs, and his general obsequious attitude towards the global conglomerates which actually run the world.
Forget national boundaries, geography is history. Boris will do exactly as he is told.

I think you have to be near to someone who tested positive for about 15 minutes for it to give you a ping, just walking passed isn't going to do it.
But it is something that seemed like a good idea about 12 months ago but has proved to be useless.
Really its down to you whether you download the app anyway so it was never going to work in the long run.
