What's buzzing or flying near you 2021?

What's this insect on my eryngium, please? Some sort of hoverfly?

@Nikolaos, looks like a Hornet Mimic Hoverfly.

 

Thank you Strongy, much appreciated! So many new insect species appearing in the garden this year that I'm having a job keeping track of them, there seems to be something new here every day!

Not seen one for a couple of years, and that was at a local wildlife trust reserve

 

Well, I'm honoured as it's been a regular visitor recently! Lovely clear photo BTW, Scrungee! Most photos of them online seem to show them on buddleias and eryngiums aren't even mentioned as one of the plant genera they feed on. There was a similar but slightly smaller, browner one on one of my plants today, I'll try to get a decent photo tomorrow if it returns...

What, like these ones? (From 2014, before I had the lens I now use for butterflies, dragonflies, etc.).

 

Wild Turkey.

 

A Jersey Tiger moth - it appears to have taken up residence in my garden, fluttering between this berberis and the bathroom windowsill. As it does so the orange under-wings become visible. Very striking, I've seen them here before but only in the last few years. I gather they used to live mainly on the South Coast but are becoming more common now in London.

 

@Clare G I found one in the peg bag on the rotary clothes line! seems to be a good year for them.

@wiseowl It looks like a Hawker, Southern or Migrant I am not sure.
