Best Supplier Of Compost 2021

I think I paid £4.50, I only bought one bag at a nursery I'd not been to before and the cost was wrapped up in some plants I bought.

Any way, another bag for my collection.

At this rate Pete you could open your shed to the public to view your national collection. Charge a fiver each and that could go towards your expensive compost purchases!

I had not heard of Greensday, a quick search resulted in that they are a new company, October 2016. However, they are not a new independent horticulture suppliers, they are actually the sister company of Evergreen horticulture.

 

I have just received Evergreen's new trade catalogue. A few pages in there is a write up on their new acquisition to the Evergreen family, Miraclegro. It also looks like they now own the Levington retail division, with ICL still owning the Levington professional division.

We used to bag for Miraclegro, this was at least over a decade ago when they first launched their Potting mix compost, think we did just over 1 million units for them. Actually had a good working relationship with them until we had a meeting with the CEO, production then came to a very swift ending.

 

We had a representative from klasmann deilmann uk come to see me yesterday regarding supplying us with some peat and peat free substrates. We were discussing the UK governments plan of phasing out peat and we both tend to believe they will only do it to the retail sector. He was telling me that, Growing Media Europe, have no plans of banning peat, it is seen as an essential constituent for growing media for edible crops and the whole horticulture industry. They are incorporating peat substitutes in growing media to have reduced peat growing media, but there is no policy to ban it, which is exactly what we should be doing.

I've spend what seemed like hours online checking the prices of Coir Blocks. I used to buy them from the Poundshop for £1, this when watered made 70L.

 

WOW, I wish I could get hold of blocks for £1 in the UK. It costs me more than £1 to buy the 5kg (70L) blocks and that does not include the ocean and road freight to get them to the UK when purchasing a 40ft container.

Something does not add up here, per litre that would be cheaper than buying peat from Ireland, I would actually go 100% peat free, it would be cheaper using coir than peat in compost. When you deduct the vat from £1 that gives me a base price of 0.012 per litre , that's cheaper than peat per litre ex works.

 

Sometime before Covid struck the Poundshop was selling them for one pound, honest.

I find Coir mixed with own compost, Perlite and feed made great compost for seeds and plants.
