Would you consider something like a planter with trellis attached? I've attached a photo but you could obviously modify it to suit your own needs. I personally wouldn't bother growing anything on your neighbors wall. They might be fine with it or they might just say they are to appease you and be good neighbours but secretly plotting your demise :)

Hi Pete, thanks for your advice. Yes, the wall forms the boundary. The wall is theirs and everything directly in front of it is ours. Pretty silly design really!

Hi BFM, thanks for getting back. Yes, I was actually considering a big planter with trellis as a good way of making the most of the sunny space without touching their wall! My concern though is whether Madame Alfred Carriere would be happy confined to the trellis as they never seem that big on these planters. Do you think it web okay?
Ps. I don’t think they would be plotting my demise but the lady is very shy and quiet and might find it hard to say no to me.

In your situation, you both gained from a compromise and well done.

@SuzFlowers maybe it will be okay with them. If she is shy, ask her to chat with her hubby about it and maybe get back to you. Sounds like lots of great alternates as plan B will be ready too.

Do let us know how you make out. :fingers crossed:

That’s my concern Lori. I wouldn’t wish to drill anything that’s not mine and so I posted here to get some alternative ideas from lots of folk with experience to consider too.

If it was me I'd just wait until they're out and do as Pete suggested. Solid battens that will last and decent fixings for the wires. Drill into brick not the mortar.
Do they ever see the wall? Worst case you'll be asked to remove and fill the holes but there's not many that would take such exception to you growing a rose on that wall.

Thanks for all these great suggestions. I really like the idea of putting up some posts if from of the wall with tall trellis panels in front and then using this to grow various nice climbers. I would have no idea about concrete and posts etc though so would need a tradesman to do it or research it and be brave!

Hi Scrungee, I am quite confident the land up to the wall is all ours, as it follows the boundary line on our title deeds, and is in a continuous of the boundary fence line behind it and the strip of grass which is the boundary to the front for front part of our house. Part of the roof does jut over it, but the guttering are back and front and not to the side: FEBE1C93-08A1-46F8-BA73-5DE9466E4AF5.jpeg

Wait till they're out! Lol.. That brings back memories.
Please don't do that, talk to them first and then decide the best of the very good previous suggestions

In that picture it looks like the fence line is going behind that wall.
Just thinking that maybe that fence should actually continue along that wall?

I agree with @JR drilling holes into someone else's property without their permission and doing it in a sneaky way just doesn't sit well with me.

Maybe @Loofah had his tongue in his cheek when he said it. I'm sure he wouldn't like someone drilling into his buildings without his permission!

The thing is, if you want to cover that wall with something then you have to fix to the wall. Anything else placed in ground adjacent to the wall is going to rot and ultimately fall away. You can either grow something else which is self clinging or fix to the wall, either option has same issue.
I would view that wall as my side of the boundary which is clearly the intent of the builders given the construction of the boundary marker (fence - wall - fence).
A few bits of wood correctly installed is not only the most effective but also simplest and least invasive.
I wouldn't bat an eyelid if that was my garage and someone wanted to do the same, I'd actually expect it. Who wants to look at a huge blank wall?

If you was to take it to the limit and say, planted ivy, I know you don't, but it's the nastiest self clinging thing I can think of, and it reached the roof, started blocking Gutters and got into the roof space Im just wondering how it would turn out in law.

I think at the end of the day that wall is not yours, so you need permission to do anything to it.
