A female Northern Cardinal going through molting season. It is a good thing birds do not have mirrors or Mrs. Cardinal would never leave the nest. But, not to worry, soon she will be her beautiful self again. That said, Mr. Cardinal is looking like a sad sack also about now.

 

My Canon sx60 died recently and I have now replaced it with a Nikon P950.
Gave it a brief try out this morning. Happy with the results so far, just cropped and resized.
Nuthatch, Little Egret and Redshank.

 

?Never seen this kind of fellow before!


Anyone know what it is? They have been clinging to the bug screens on our windows the last few days.

 

We know them here as shield bugs @CanadianLori but you may know them as stink bugs.

 

Thank you @Sheal . Sounds like something I don't want. It is strange that they have only turned up recently. I wonder if it has something to do with my neighbour at the back having a yard full of rotting apples.

 

They're not very plant friendly @CanadianLori and it's a possibility the fruit has drawn them in.

Well spotted Strongy. I've never seen one - would it be about the same size as a Kestrel?

 

@Sheal similar in size yes, it's main diet is dragonflies and therefore arrives here from Africa in late Spring to coincide with dragonfly emergence. They breed later than other raptors and change diet to young birds to feed the young. Within a week or so they will be gone.
