Maybe your insurance company wont pay up if your house burns down?

          Regarding the fire alarms.
I think it stated that they need to be linked so you can hear them in every part of the house.
I can hear mine in every part of my house and I can even hear the neighbours ones from my house.

This is in reflection to the Grenfell towers fire?
Yeah I think comparing a normal house to a block of flats is just slightly OTT.

Quite typical of the modern way of things - - do something just because you will be able to sit in a meeting and say 'I did this'... whether 'this' was actually effective in any way is irrelevant, at least they can say they did 'something'

It's in Scotland now, how long before the rest of us have to follow just because of an arse covering exercise.

I am registered on a website, "hotukdeals" where members post links of deals. Wickes were selling Knauf 200mm x 5.6m2 for £18.50 click and collect, but it has expired now. B&Q are selling them for £25, they have an ongoing deal 3 rolls for £54.

It's a site worth checking out as the site covers everything.

Thanks, I will take a look - won't be in the short term sadly as I need to do some financial sorting out first.

Nobody of course @shiney. That said they've also got to gain access to peoples property. I haven't seen any mention of penalties.

I'd be inclined to agree with that @Scrungee. There's also the possibility that houses wouldn't be allowed to be sold without it installed.

That's right @pete, they are linked by wi-fi. You can see the details in the second link I posted. I can hear my current ones too but of course they don't comply with the new regulations. There's also going to be a lot of perfectly good alarms making their way to landfill.

It is in response to the Grenfell Tower fire. I wonder how long it will take to change the alarms in council and privately rented properties?

Then may be it's the lack of lorry drivers getting supplies up here.

What made me wonder about that is If in England insurance companies can reduce payouts for non-compliance with Building Regulations (N.B. not retrospective), something similar might also happen in Scotland, where loss adjusters could say the absence smoke detectors led to the fire damage being worse and reduce the claim accordingly.

It would be an interesting court case to declare fire damage being worse because already installed working smoke detectors were not linked by wifi. It would need to be a condition of insurance and notified as a change to the conditions for those renewing previous cover.

On a lighter note:- many years ago (over 50 years) the local authority asked to come in to speak to my staff (individually) about conditions at work and wages. In those days the same department could administer the regulations for both, under the Wages Council regulations.

The inspector asked my permission to speak to one of them and they went into the staff room.

First question:- Do you think you are receiving at least the minimum wage? Answer:- Mind your own business!

Second question:- What would you do in case of fire? Answer:- Run around in circles screaming!

The inspector gave up interviewing any more staff but still did a full compliance check (nowadays it would be a Health & Safety check). All he could find wrong was that the wall thermometer (had to have them in those days) was one inch too high!

Are they mains operated? I think mains smoke detectors may be one of the things that householders can no longer do themselves and must use expensive electricians.

Our dog comes running to find us, barking like crazy if one of ours goes off. We then make a fuss of him for being a good dog and give him a biscuit. Works for us.

P.S. When there's a house full of smoke/heat/carbon monoxide detectors all going off together, how do you know which room has a problem?
