I was going to plant some bulbs in pots but changed my mind and went for a walk instead

Removed broken leaves from Dahlia imperalis, made a lot of growth this year despite a late start and the attention of a swarm of slugs and snails, only 7ft tall though.
Weeded, hoed and cut back in one flower bed. Cut down the late flowering aconitum, wore gloves and washed hands afterwards.

That sounds like Viburnum Scale . Tinus is very susceptible to it. Check under the leaves and on the stems and branches for very small white scale. They're tiny and almost impossible to remove from the wood.

In the last few days we have done a reasonable amount of work in the garden.

We've cut back more dogwood, and I've filled another wheelie bin with weeds from some of the flower beds in the front garden - mainly violets and thistles (don't know where they have suddenly come from).

In the back garden we have started work on the herb garden. The bay tree in the centre of the bed had got out of hand. Early in the year we had reduced it from 30ft high down to 10ft. This had caused it to suddenly go mad and apart from having a sudden growth spurt upwards it decided to double in width to 15ft :hate-shocked:. This has now been drastically cut back and looks rather hacked about.

In the same bed we have removed an 8ft x 3ft section of variegated sage, a similar size of thyme and mint and shall remove the same amount of purple sage. We planted them almost 50 years ago and have been rather lax in keeping them under control. We have three Rosemary bushes, each 6ft high and 3ft wide, that need a lot of judicious pruning. It has given me the chance to start on weeding that area. I've also started making new edges around the herb plot which is about 30ft x 20ft. I was supervised very closely by Sarafi the cat whilst doing the edges. He kept head butting my legs! He keeps a close eye on me whilst I'm out there.

Sadly, a specimen conifer we planted over 40 years ago in the front garden has decided to give up. Its leaves started turning brown early in the year and though we watered it heavily every day it hasn't survived. So Lewis, who does the heavy work for us, had to cut it down

He also did the heavy work on the bay tree and cut back the wild roses and brambles that were growing around the poplar trees at the back. He also topped and shaped the hazel tree you can see half of, on the right, in the first tree picture.

Jobs in the garden today? Getting the flower pots off the puppy, as he ran around the garden with them, as fast as we could move them into the shed out of his reach. We also had to cover the compost bays, as someone helps himself to the contents (and then farts his results all evening - apologies for the graphic details!)

              …that’s about it, really!

Nothing much in the garden today, but back and fore the greenhouse, bringing my seedlings and cuttings indoors, and covered most of my larger cactus with fleece, before the frost starts, getting much colder in the nights :blue thumb:

I did two and a half hours of mowing today and my muscles are complaining now. Manhandling a 100kg mower doesn't feel too hard when I started but a couple of hours later it seems to have put on weight! Emptying the grass box seemed to get harder as well. :old: If I don't have too many regrets tomorrow I'll do the rest of the mowing. It should only take about 90 minutes.

I sympathise @shiney. Due too an arm injury I've not used my mower since April and it's going to be hard next Spring when I get back to it.

Me too. My Honda is a beast so I've taken to just going in ever decreasing circles to make life a little easier. I do miss the stripes though!

Still in the throes of cutting things back or composting them. Trouble is so much is still in bloom, the Cosmos are doing fabulously well, so are the Rudbeckias....even the good old Marigolds are looking too healthy to heave out. The Dahlias are still putting on a good display too but are noticeably slowing down now.
I will hopefully begin Tulip planting soon along with some other bulbs that have been patiently waiting their turn.

I have almost completed writing up all the various seed sowing dates for '22' onto my online diary which gives me the appropriate daily reminders, I am trying to work it so that we don't have too many to germinate indoors this year, although there will still be a handful that will need that level of protection still.

I did a spot of tidying up today - pulled out petunia plants from window boxes, tidied up the hostas, putting the yellowed leaves into the green bin for collection this week, did a bit of weeding. Need to cut the grass tomorrow if it stays dry, it’s still growing like mad.

Finished logging all the sowing dates for the remaining seeds that I've selected for next year onto my online diary.

Trimmed and tidied up all the potted Hostas, trimmed right back and potted up a couple of Fuchsias that I missed a couple of weeks ago. Planted up 4 more pots with Spring bulbs. Swept the 3 patios.
