Not a particularly efficient way of getting a result. What if the country has a lot of tundra or desert? The gardens in this area have quite a lot of trees. Are they taken into account? :heehee:

I'm hoping to find out where this bloke is with the scales and putting all the CO2 on them and weighing it, must be like trying to knit fog.

They would have to be forced to like it - besides, it can be protected and coated to withstand fire as you know. No question it is the most flexible and sustainable building material with good old red brick next I suppose.

I don't disagree, but if they want to change, it is this sort of thing that needs to change. Sure, not everyone wants a garden, but even if they have nothing but a bit of grass outside that is much better for drainage. Tower blocks most certainly are not good, particularly when it comes to overwhelming sewers etc.

Hmm..I reckon over-population is the key, but what country's Gov is going to try to tackle that? Especially when high birthrate = more tax (at least in theory).

But who would have thought 30 yrs ago we would be building windmills and telling people not to cut down trees.
Something has got to happen regarding world population or else what they are waffling on about now is pointless.

Me, personally, I'm looking forward to the 40C summers they are promising us by 2030, just wish they could also promise us frost free winters.
But I'll probably be too old to give two monkeys by then.

Again, I don't disagree - maybe some sort of limit will be imposed in future, who knows. Somewhat ironically, China are going the other way and trying to get people to have more children as they are really concerned about not having enough younger folks to take care of the older ones in future.

I think the whole thing is being looked at the wrong way up and has been for many, many years... decades in fact. The ban this, ban that and make everything cost a bomb routine is clearly not working. How about stimulating ideas to make things better but also at the same time accept that we are not going to stop the climate changing and start adapting to it?

It's inevitable, and will be far worse than anything that is being contemplated ATM, probably just one boy and one girl, whatever one's financial situation. There's just no other way of improving the current situation or future projected ones IMHO. It's the old problem of putting emotionalism before the collective wellbeing of mankind and/or the environment. The Boomers placed far too much emphasis on feelings and not enough on civic duty.

Interestingly tree coverage in the UK came up in Radio 4's "More or Less" a few weeks ago (29th Sept 2021) last 5 minutes BBC Radio 4 - More or Less, Is it easy being green?
According to O Rackham "The History of the Countryside" you have to go back to the old - mid stone age for Britain to be as forested as possible. Neolithic peoples brought agriculture (about 4000 BC) and set about methodically felling trees and they removed about half the forest coverage by the early Iron Age (500BC). This continued over the centuries so that by the Domesday Book about 15% of England was woodland. By the end of the First World War this was down to about 5%, this led to the Forestry Commission being set up. Current coverage is about 13%.
One of the reasons for the low coverage is that a lot of the UK is accessible and readily converted for agriculture; whereas on the continent there are mountains with steep valleys, countries like Holland and Ireland have fairly low coverage while France, Germany and Italy are 30+%. The highest levels of coverage in Scandinavia about 70% here another factor is the long cold winters reducing the amount of agriculture that is practical.

I just think we need to make those that cant control themselves pay.

Instead of making those that do, pay to look after those whose kids are running around, and the likes of footballers jump on the bandwagon and make it all of our problem instead of just those that caused the problem.
Put a cork in it, or just buy a condom.

Birthrate tends to fall as countries become wealthier and healthier, especially as child mortality decreases. Japan and Italy are currently below replacement rate and the UK and some other European are not far above that rate, China has stepped away from the 1 child and even the two child policy as they are now concerned about maintaining a work force.
                        Russia is a special case.

@NigelJ if we get global warming here, we'll have enough land and the lengthened growing season to feed the world! :)

And my last moan of the day. Snow is forecast for tonight. :doh:I'm not ready for that stuff yet!

                            or a couple of bricks.
In India they swapped transistor radios for vasectomys in the 70's.

It amazed me how old much of the deforestation is when I first heard about it, I think I came across it a couple of years ago when looking at the Neolithic complex of Avebury, a lot of those structures were built around that transitional period from hunter-gatherers to farmers. I always imagined it happened a lot later but when one thinks of it in the context of creating more arable land, it makes so much sense!

I dont think that applies when you look at immigrants, areas with large immigrant populations are more likely to be the ones that are expanding, its only the drop in birth rate in other areas that make the figures appear that way.
