What's Looking Good In November 2021

Musa basjoo, got killed off to the ground last winter, but has made a come back and I've taken a fair few pups from it. Small Musella lasiocarpa to the left.


Got a few decent lemons this year, enough for me anyway.


Fatsia doing its usual "thing" at this time of the year.


Melianthus major always looks at its best this time of the year, IMO.


Seed pods on Hedychium densiflorum.


I think I managed to pollenate a few of the Butia odorata flowers.

Amicia zygomeris this has really "enjoyed" this years weather, a slow start, but a good finish.

Tephrocactus Articulatus which was nearly bald of spines in summer, has really done well

Things on their last noggins.
The Brug just wont give up, it been battered and nearly frosted, but its still flowering.


Fuchsia thalia just goes on at this time of year,


Bougainvillea on its last legs, but another tender one that will carry on if I let it.


All in the process of drying off and getting ready for storage.

 

All is looking great Pete. I just love that Thalia.

 

Its partially dried off in the picture, I'm looking at chopping it all off and putting it in the garage in the next few days.

I wish my Fuchsia triphylla looked a fraction as good as that. I have it in a shaded spot but I think the heat is too much for it,

 

As you know, I'm no fuschia expert but I do find this one the easiest for taking heat better, even so, I still grow it facing north all summer.
If you can move yours I'm sure it would like a sunny spot during the winter, and move back into the shade next spring.
Don't be afraid to cut it back to 6ins or so, it will respond if you feed it regularly.

 

I've never managed to keep a fuchsia thalia ( or other triphylla group ) overwinter or even propagate.

 

It is North facing but bearing in mind our winter day temps are still 15-20c. I will consider a severe cutback.

 

Perki ,all I've ever done is dry it off, but not bone dry, cut it down to 6-9ins high and put it in my unheated garage.
I've had this one for more than 30yrs, cuttings obviously taken from time to time.
I actually struggle with the other large flowered types more.
