My Alstroemerias are getting more and more leaves so I am hoping they will bloom again. Lovely little birds.

I believe @glengarry23 is referring to the old Celtic winter @Upsydaisy, it's the same here in Wales. The Celtic winter starts on October 31st and lasts until January. Spring begins in February.
The Celtic year doesn't correspond to the English year nor to the meteorological 'seasons' ... it is much older

You live in England @Upsydaisy so you would not have heard of it (I mean no offence by that, we just happen to live where we do :imphrt: )

I didn't know that either Michael. In all the years I've been reading history I've not come across it.

I don't think it would be mentioned in history books @Sheal, you have to be Welsh or Irish to know about it, or you'd have to read books on Welsh or Irish customs.

@Upsydaisy ,..ah i am laughing here,..you are correct,..as am i :),..the explanation is our Traditional Gaelic Calender,..most of us go according to this,..the farming community in particular,..its complicated even in time wise as when someone asks the time of day,..and one gives the time,..they then ask are you going by new time or old,..folks think Brexit got complicated,..scroll down and see how complicated the start of Winter is,.. we have three choices as to when Winter starts :wallbanging:

Winter in Ireland, like all seasons on the Emerald Isle, is hard pin down exact dates. Traditionally speaking, winter will start around December and continue through December’s Winter Equinox and Christmas into January and February. As with the rest of the year, Ireland’s Gaelic calendar is quite different than what most people consider spring to be.

On the Gaelic calendar, winter or Geimhreadh, starts the day after Halloween (in Ireland, it is referred to as Samhain) on November 1st. On the same Gaelic calendar, February 1st is actually the start of spring.

                  Starts
                  Ends
                  Meteorological Winter in Ireland

1st of December 31st of February
                  Astronomical Winter in Ireland
21st of December 20th of March
                  Traditional Gaelic Seasons
                  1st November 1st of February

@Upsydaisy ,..:imphrt: lol Upsydaisy,..i replied to your first post before i came upon this one,..not to worry as its such a complicated system that i always have to have a card on hand which gives me the Traditional or Meteoroligists Season start time,..i go by the Traditional one,..which tends to have an earlier start for each season.

Nice to have so many roses in November, and the mallow too. Those grow like weeds in my garden and I have to keep digging them out but they are very pretty.

@Upsydaisy,..you would be surprised at how many people living hereabouts are not familiar with the three variations of start to seasons and the end as well,..i must admit i get confused myself :),..something else while we are on the subject,..we have a Temperate Oceanic Climate here.
