WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

Have been out and all the neighbours fences okay, everything else is pretty much where it was supposed to be.

 

That’s us: sandy soil and pretty free draining though the water table is very close to the surface in the winter…. Hmmm. I’ll need to think

 

Still about the same @Logan , the noise of the wind last night didn’t help, it aggravated the ringing in the ear, thanks for asking Logan, hope your eye is better for you

 

Oh dear I thought that you might be a bit better by now.hope that it is soon.
Thanks for asking my eye is going well, it's been 2 weeks so I can start bending forward for a while, but another 2 weeks before I can do anything strenuous.But I'm aloud to do light vacciming now and I can gradually do the dog walking by myself. I'm glad because I can't put up with hubby moaning all the time when I walk with him, but he's been very good with other things. But I still think that I can't do anything in the garden, the blackberries and loganberries need the new canes tied in but that will have to wait.

 

@JimmyB I've had a number of these in different parts of the garden and over the years got fed up with shoots coming up further and further away; so they are gradually being moved under the trees where they slowly establish, but I can run the mower over any errant shoots.

@wiseowl I'm sorry to hear about your feathered friends.

It sounds like you've turned this tragedy into triumph by pivoting the way you have. I had a problem with rats near my house so I moved the bird feeder a good distance from my deck. Gassed underneath the deck and now they are gone. Nothing attractive to them is left near the house to bring them back. Nasty things!

I only watered my indoor plants and as I did that I noticed some soil gnats around the hibiscus that is in the cellar and under the LED grow lights. So I covered the soil surface with a thick layer of sand.

Other than that, I'm doing gardening "thinking". I want a table top sized Christmas tree and am pondering if I should try to find one in a pot that can be kept for more than one year. Anyone have something like this? Are they hard to maintain and they hard to keep a manageable size?

 

Now that is a great thought: I’ve got an area under the branches of a big old fig tree and I haven’t worked out what to plant there. This could be a great solution! It gets some light but it is restricted when the leaves are there. Love it!

 

Been out to deconstruct the second of 3 raised beds, using the contents (mix
Of compost and manure) as a mulch over a bed of cardboard and seaweed on a new no dig to be flower border. It was pretty wild but when the hail and rain storms came through I planted a few seeds in the greenhouse and took an angle grinder to the screws sticking out of the sleepers from the old beds. I did try to get them out with a screw driver but after wrecking 3 heads in a row on my drill I took the pragmatic approach.

Something really great and elemental about being out in this weather though. Love it. But now waiting to get my booster. Not quite so much fun…

 

@JimmyB , l know just what you mean about the weather , l love it too. I’ve got this theory that if you were born in the winter ( l was ) you really love lots of weather . Born in the summer , perhaps prefer the beach.
Of course , nothing stopping you enjoying both !!.

That happened to me @wiseowl a few years back , my budgies, finches, quails all were killed by rats, I’ve never kept them since, I still get tearful seeing them in their cage and for sale at pets at home
