    I have this nagging feeling.....
Are those young people getting the Omicron version but not self quarantining because they just feel " a bit rough with this yukky cough" ?
Spreading it at a rate of between 4 - 5 people?

I'm sorry to say that most GP's IMO are using Covid as an excuse for being lazy. I've been trying since January 2019 to get the results of my 24 hour BP test done at the Hospital.

Never get through on the phone or get an answer online.

It is possible - also part of the problem is that many employers will now not give 'company' sick pay to people who are isolating because they have been pinged because they have been near someone who has tested positive; many people simply cannot afford to pay their bills on SSP, so will carry on going to work etc.

If this variant is a mild as it has been reported so far however, I see this as no bad thing as it will pass fast and build immunity fast with low incidence of serious illness

That's not something new, most people dont get "company" sick pay, its a luxury millions dont have, and probably why lots of people cant even consider getting involved in the stupid "pinging" game
I booked a phone appointment with my GP for tomorrow, three weeks ago, when I asked what time I was told it will be some time during the day, but most likely PM.
Now I dont work I can stay around home and be ready for a call, but not the best idea, to somebody who works its totally useless.:frown:

The NHS has always been an organisation where "our time matters but your dont", but its being taken even further now.
I'm bashing the NHS, yes, the NHS is very good at some things like if you have an accident and get passed the A&E, but its been lacking for a long time now regarding general heath of the population, now made worse by covid.

And when we hear them say the back log is partly due to "people not coming forward during covid", that statement says it all, tell that to those that have tried and failed.

Indeed, it isn't new @pete - however many companies that do/did pay sick pay will not for covid isolation

To add another angle (and by no means defending the NHS):

We have similar, if different problems here in Germany. There is a huge backlog of patients having to wait for their treatments because COVID-patients (90% of them unvaccinated) have higher priority.
This makes me sad and really really angry because a dear friend of mine is currently waiting for cancer treatment. But she is being told there are no free capacities and since her cancer hasn't metastasised yet "it's not life threatening". She is 24 by the way and probably won't ever have any children anymore because of this...

Adding to the pile, a lot of health care workers quit their jobs because they feel screwed over. During every wave of COVID so far, they got promised better working conditions by politicians fishing for votes, and they got dropped every single time as soon as the wave passed since there apparently wasn't a need anymore. So quite a few burned out and left for another job.

If people would just quietly take their jab or at least have the decency to sign a paper saying "since COVID ain't real, I don't need any medical assistance in case I catch that make-belief flu", the problem would solve itself.

Do you have that many unvaccinated folks in Germany then?

Please do defend the NHS, I can only speak as I find, and other views are welcome, especially from people who dont rely on the NHS.
We often dont hear from our media what is really going on in other countries, just hyped up versions of events.

I think it is appalling what I have read on here over the last couple of years. GPs closing, working minimum hours etc.

We are thankful we are living here through the current crisis. Our SNS/NHS does not seem to be under the strain other countries are experiencing. I read an article recently stating how many consultations and operations have been performed this year and last year.

I am sure there must be some but I know of nobody having issues with SNS nor private. Actually someone I know had her knee replaced last week in the private hospital with a coupon from the SNS. She was not desperate and was walking the dogs daily albeit painfully.

Some more interesting tit bits coming out:

                      - Omicron virus concentrates in upper part of respiratory tract - which means infected people breathe out more particles of virus - explaining why it is more infectious. This is good news in that fatalities from Delta were due to the virus getting deep into the lungs - which is why people were ventilated and why the Omicron version is not as severe.

                      - More stuff coming out about injection into blood - confirming it is not a good thing. Inject into muscle and the vaccine gets into the blood at a more controlled rate - instead of in one massive hit if it is injected directly into blood stream.

I had the Moderna booster - bit of a sore arm - then the day after - absolutely pooped out. Went to bed early last night and better this morning :blue thumb:.

                      No more boosters for me.

I would reckon so - which is not necessarily a bad thing as those who are at most risk have been jabbed. When I get Omicron - the jabs will protect me and the natural infection will boost my immune response further.

It's at the stage now where the risk to people is not being able to get themselves over to the NHS for treatment for other ailments - not Omicron.

It's well past the time get back to normal IMHO.

Last month T'other Half had to go to Lisbon (2-3/4 train ride North of us) for his yearly cancer checkup, the appointment being given last November. A friend went with him for company. He was in and out in no time time for them to have lunch before their return train. He has been given his appointment for next November. This is a State Hospital, ie free.

A friend was taken to our local SNS Hospital Portimao over the weekend and I am waiting to hear from his wife how things are. She had to be tested before visiting.

When I went to the Specialist three weeks ago at the Private Hospital with short-notice appointment, we just had our temperatures taken before being allowed in.

From our National Newspaper, Diario de Noticias today (Google Translated) ...

"12 people infected with the Omicron variant have died in the UK

This Monday it was learned that in the UK 12 people infected with the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 died and 104 were hospitalized, revealed Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab. "If you look at Omicron, what we know is that it spreads very quickly. We currently have 104 hospitalizations for Omicron, we've had 12 deaths. But there's a lag time in the data and so we don't know how serious it will be," Raab said, who is also justice minister, Times Radio. "The only thing we know is that those who received a booster dose have an effective protection of more than 70%," he added, to justify the acceleration of the third dose administration campaign announced by the government eight days ago."

Domino is trying to justify government over reaction to Omicron.

He needs to look at South Africa to see what will happen here - a 91% reduction in hospital admissions with Omicron for a start.

There's a cabinet meeting going on right now - asking Chris what he thinks about South Africa - if they go for lock down - this time - the public will respond with 2 fingers.

Does Boris not realise that joe public can easily do their own research and make their own minds up?
