It is a known fact that the domestic sector uses more peat than the professional and commercial sector put together. When peat was being burnt for energy, which it is hardly used nowadays, it accounted for the vast majority of peat that was being extracted.

The white paper document to phase out peat was released in 2011, outlining the timescale to phase out peat. The domestic sector was to be banned from 2016, the semi professional sector from 2021, with the professional and commercial sector being banned from 2031. The government, then gave the retail sector until the beginning of 2021 to phase out peat, but they waived it due to Covid.

As by your link, the phasing of peat to the professional and commercial sector has actually been brought forward, where as the retail sector has benefited from been able to still use peat for a further 9 years.

Peat is not dug out of the ground, it's harvested. They don't drain and go below the water table which results in C02 being released, yet they don't tell you that.

Anyways, on the link it does state than the consultation falls short of an outright ban, with a levy charge being an option. Does that mean a ban to the domestic sector and a levy to the professional sector or both? I don't know yet.

I don't want to see peat banned, I have made my views very clear to my local MP and the NFU, but it is now your chance to have your say, link below.

People who buy me plants as presents because they like them. They don't ask if I would like them or, worse, if my garden has the right conditions for that plant.
Recent years have seen the arrival of a number of hedychiums which struggle with me, a couple of pink roses; rose okay, but pale pink what were they thinking of. A variegated marjoram, I dislike variegated plants in general. A geranium that has self seeded and become a weed.
A quick chat is all that's required I generally have a couple of plants on my want list.
Anybody want a wasabi plant likes damp, not soggy, shade cool summers etc.

I feel your pain Nigel, but it could be worse. Years ago I gave all and their dogs some pups of Aloe Aristata that just fills up every vessel within its reach.

Guess what I had for a (lovely and genuinely very thoughtful) birthday present recently? My friend remembered my interest in plants and succulents in particular, and said that instead of a bouquet she thought I'd prefer a live plant... (true). :dancy:Well, I got a pup of Aloe Aristata, quite probably a descendent of one of my "generous donations". So now I have too much of endemic Aloe A plus some new Aloe A to add in.

The worst bit is that as it is a present, and especially one given with such a warm thought there is no way I can mistreat the plantlet or consider binning it. :wallbanging:

I'm not sure people who are not "into" plants realise just how narrow our interests can be.

Even those that are "into" plants are often "into" different plants than we are.

My moan for the day is TV adverts. I have no idea what the heck is going on with them, they seem to be completely nonsensical nowadays!

Over here it's orchids, every time :gaah: My house is generally too dark for houseplants and apart from Miltonia which is scented, orchids leave me cold. The ones that do survive rarely if ever flower twice. Just a tuft of leaves that sit there gathering dust and making me feel guilty  I blame Lidl :roflol:

That happens a lot here too Jiffy but it's usually the animals owned by one particular crofter.

Some of them do. I know someone that has to chain and padlock certain gates to stop the cattle opening them.

Just watching a TV programme in which they are recycling bottles.
Showed you the usual bins with different coloured glass in each.

Then this lorry comes along and empties them all, .......... into the same truck.

Then they take them back and remove other stuff, the glass is crushed and separated for colour.

So why do they get us idiots to put bottles into different coloured bins in the first place.:frown:

I dont think will ever understand recycling.
