Are they though? The numbers that matter - deaths and hospitalisations - are flat or dropping despite 'cases' rocketing. Omicron would appear to be pushing the more dangerous Delta variant out and essentially giving a lot of folks a heavy cold and thereby natural immunity/vaccination.

We also have to remember that the common cold is a coronavirus (as is the flu) and it is accepted that the current tests cannot distinguish between covid and the likes of the flu, to the point that PCR tests are being withdrawn in the US - Lab Alert: Changes to CDC RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 Testing

      Talk about milking it.
Just turned onto the BBC news channel and they are doing a rerun of last January.

This is taking repeats to its ultimate.

It is amazing, and of course good news, that with the high numbers there are few hospitalisations and deaths.

A thought I had last night ... These folk who take a self test and are positive, are they supposed to notify the health authorities (here SNS24) to be recorded and be one of the numbers, or do they just isolate for a few days or go about their business as normal? There must be hundreds of thousands self testing.

@Victoria in the UK when we self test we report the results to the NHS, both negative and positive results are reported. The numbers go into our daily updates, I guess it's the same in Portugal.

Report LFT, well that is news to me, and I imagine quite a few other people. I thought it was only the PCR type lab test that was reported.

Here is the LFT covid test reporting site. Honestly the hours spent listening to covid reports and watching Dr John Campbell on YouTube, I never heard this!

Yes I am sure many do not, especially when it's positive! We have a shortage of kits in the UK I think people are hoarding them as they are free and no limits. Nowt so strange as folk.

I have only done two tests, one just to see how it works and I can't remember why I did the other one - probably for a bad memory.

Reading the wording on the site under "Why you should report your test" doesn't seem to give any cogent reason for reporting a negative test if you have never had a positive test. For me to report my test I would have had to phone 119 and possibly waste a lot of my time and theirs.

We are out of our depth regarding " managing " the control of the virus.
I say, let it run its course. If you are afraid due to health limitations then you are the ones that need to protect yourselves but not the rest of us who need to get on with life.
I will meet Omicron square on if it confronts me and rest and recuperate as necessary if I get infected.

Are people reporting a false positive test to throw a sickie?

Yesterday there was 1.6m new cases reported world wide, a record. Of those new cases 860k were reported in Europe with 509k new cases in North America. So over 1.3m new cases out of 1.6m. Combined population of Europe and North America is probably somewhere around 1.4 billion out of a world population of 7.9 billion. Since the beginning of this pandemic, worldwide deaths stand at 5.4m. Europe and North America accounts for 2.7m, so 50% of all deaths.

Some of these reports don't sit right with me. We often hear in the UK we are going to be hit with a tsunami of new cases and daily deaths in to thousands, shortages of this and that. Anxiety and fear can have a detrimental effect on your health, which the British media don't seem to care one jot.

Its kind of been my approach for the last 2 yrs ie. dont do anything stupid, be careful but dont hide away.
It says in the paperwork that comes with the test kit you should report even negative tests.
But cant really see the point, I've used 2 of 7, one like @shiney just as an experiment and one before I went out christmas day.
I only have them because other people ask if you have been tested, personally I think I would know if I had got the lurgi.
