WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

 

Nothing! It's a quiet hangover day

 

I've just mowed the front lawns. Are we still able to call them lawns if they're 80% moss?

 

Have you been having it mowed by the cows?

 

For the last few I've been working on the front garden making new edges for the lawns, cutting the grass and weeding in the gullies. Mrs Shiney has been going round the back garden cutting back some of the shrubs/perennials such as Leycesteria and grasses.

I still have a way to go with the edges but I'm getting there.

This is the main front lawn (have two smaller ones) and you can see why I asked earlier in this thread if you can call something that is 80% moss, a lawn.

All the top part of the picture is where I haven't yet cut the edges


All along this edge the Alchemilla mollis has gone mad and we're struggling to dig a lot of it out (very tough to dig) and it had gone mad in the area near the bucket. We have filled eight boxes with it and they shall go to the charity garden centre with some other things we shall dig out.


The moss doesn't look too bad when it's mowed and a lot of the green area is made up of daisies, dandelions and clover.


Two years ago this area was a giant Viburnum


This is the back area of that bed and was a jungle - mainly Dogwood and Laburnum




I can't get a straight edge along this bed because of tree and shrub roots. I've curved it around the tree roots.


We cut this Heather hard back last year but don't seem to have made an impression on it.


During November we were working on the bed on the front verge. That is very difficult to do as all the area near the footpath is full of very old bearded irises and they're in quite gravelly soil. Very deep rooted weeds have grown through them and we can't dig them out. The back part of the bed has loads of Crocosmia and we filled the car with what we had dug out and took them to the charity nursery.

We haven't started on the other beds.

This time of year I concentrate on the front garden first as that is what we see the most.

 

@Sheal It's a bee orchid that hasn't yet dropped all its seeds.

 

Took the Christmas tree out back and executed it. All chopped up, shredded and spread as a mulch around the magnolia.
