Christmas crackers - the gifts inside used to be plastic rubbish but now they are paper rubbish. The pick of this year's bunch were a paper moustache and a 3 inch ruler made from card. Every other cracker had a magic fish that promised to foretell the future but just curled up to indicate how hot or cold our hands were.

There's a simple solution for the rubbishy Christmas cracker problem :) Buy a box of decent, wrapped chocolates, carefully undo one end of cracker, insert choccie, then close up cracker. In the days when I was flush, I used to buy tiny, useful genuine presents to insert, but you have to make sure that the guests sit where planned

My sister used a cracker kit for hers this year. Really good crackers, jokes etc and a decent bang but you supply the gift. She went with the easy option of chocolate

About 6months ago I started having milk delivered, but still bought a couple of bottles a week in the supermarket.
Anyway I found it didn't seem to keep very well, and if not used immediately it went sour, they only delivered 2 days a week and the bottle tops were always stamped with a use by date of at least 5 days.

I thrown my last two bottles away and cancelled my order now, after complaining on two other occasions.

Has anyone else found that milk in the old glass bottles doesn't last as long as the stuff in the plastic bottles.
Or is this place not sterilising the bottles correctly.

You don't get milk in bottles here. We buy long life in cartons (I can hear you cringe). I don't use it in tea and rarely have coffee when I have a milky one (coffee in a glass here, GalaƵ). I use off or unused milk in the garden. specifically at the base of my Sunseeker rose.

Sorry I didn't answer your question.

On some farms the milk can be 2 days old before tanker collcets it. big farms can have milk collocted every day as there can't store the milk but some farms can as they have bigger tanks to take 2 days of milk, the milk tanker will take the milks temp to make sure it's at the right temp but if it's to high the tanker will not take it(the test is taken out of the driver hands now), what i would like to know if that happerns what happerns to it, does farmer put it down drain or cool it to the right temp and send it on ;)

I have had milk form the supermarket (in plastic) and it's gone off before the use by date

We have a farm that you can by milk from a vending machine not far away, but the cows are milk on another farm so the milk will have to be transpoted the where the vending machine is :th scifD36: but i won't be buying any milk from there as it doesn't look good and being that i've been on/off farms for most of my life (lorry driving) i've got to know a lot of what goes on :mute:

Pete, were you getting it from the local milkman or a farmer that set up bottling and selling milk to the public?

We used to have a very reliable milkman for many years, milk was on the doorstep before we got up. When he retired his round was taken over by two people , strangely they went around together and it was hit or miss what time of day they came, sometimes the milk would sit outside all day if they delivered after we left for work. So it went off quicker. They kept getting our order wrong so we cancelled, it was a shame.

We get milk delivered now with our Tesco order, it's in plastic bottles so I can't help your question Pete. It lasts a long time being skimmed milk it lasts well after it's use by date. Is yours full fat milk Pete, that goes off much quicker anyway?

We used to have it delivered but the service was again so hit and miss we just stopped. Bizarrely, Mrs L has just signed up to it again so we'll see how it goes

Our problem with bottled milk was more of a nuisance. When we first moved in, 50 years ago, the milk float was horse drawn. The milkman, Mr Wilkinson, used to deliver to the front door - 100ft from the road. He then got an electric float and used to drive in and deliver to the front door.

When he retired at the age of 84 his replacement told us that he was not allowed to come onto our property, and we and the neighbours, had to have a milk bucket up by the gatepost.
He delivered with no trouble at all, except on the coldest days the milk used to freeze and push the lid off the bottle.

When he retired his replacement said he couldn't deliver one bottle a day but delivered two bottles every other day. The trouble with that was he used to get our delivery mixed up with some of the neighbours! He also got the bills wrong.

After complaining to the dairy a number of times we just gave up and so did some of the neighbours. It was then not viable for him to deliver to just the few places left as his nearest other delivery was two miles away. The dairy eventually closed his route and sacked him. Nobody was given the job (or they couldn't get anyone) so everyone lost their delivery.

In the early days Mr Wilkinson used to deliver lots of other things that he picked up for his customers on the way. He even delivered our elderly neighbour's paraffin for her heaters - and when she was ill he cooked her breakfast for her. He was the milkman for the whole of the village in those days so everyone used to give him messages for other villagers.

Mine was an existing milk round but he knocked on the door one day and asked if I was interested.
I said I would and he has delivered on time, but he only comes 2 days a week?
I've never seen his float or him since the first day, he delivers in the middle of the night.

So I said 2 pints on each day and the rest I will get with my shopping.

But this stuff is smelling sour even on the day its delivered, but useable.
After three days its gone off and goes lumpy in tea or coffee.

Its semi skimmed, not had the real thing in years.

It may be that it's in and out of fridges from one day to the next what don't sell today get put out for tomorrow
does the milk that don't sell in shops get returned (clos to use by date) and repaked into bottles for door step's

I don't know but could see thing happening

It comes from a local dairy Jiffy.
I cant imagine that supermarket, out of date, milk gets resold.
