      @kindredspirit

      They have done well for you.

      Until you have your alpine house built, I would cover them with a layer of bubble wrap from November to March.

        Hi @Sirius.

        Alpine House is now almost there. I'd say I'll be able to get them inside next week I hope. The original Cheilanthes has survived two winters outside already, though.

        Some water-worn limestone rocks, pulled out of a farmer's field, that I couldn't lift into the Alpine House. The one on the left must weigh a couple of ton. Eeek! I was considering planting into them with alpines but I think I'll just leave them as they are. They were completely covered in gluey mud and you couldn't see the grykes originally.

            Those are fantastic @kindredspirit Pity you can't put them in your greenhouse but they look nice just where they are. They will weather nicely and maybe take on some mosses or lichens. You could even plant some house leeks in them ... but I think they look nice as they are.

              I've never seen rocks that have worn like that.
              And "grykes" is a new word for me. :biggrin:

                They're cracks in blocks of limestone. The bits between the grykes are called clints :smile:

                  The rocks are absolutely brilliant, true art from the nature.

                  Thanks @Michael Hewett for the words, I'll store grykes and clints into the crossword puzzle part of my brain. Never heard of them before so a very delightful learning. English always takes me by surprise with the richness of the language :)

                      Aeonium tabuliforme growing in the Alpine House. In habitat it grows on steep rock around 1700 feet.

                        I grew a couple of these from seed last year, one has grown fairly fast the other is a bit slower.

                        Yep. Had one last year that flowered and then died as a result. It had reached almost 18" in diameter.
                        Got these present ones ones last Autumn from a friend who grew them from seed.
