It is 18f -9c and going down to -10f -21c . But the skies are mostly blue with only a few puffs of white. The guessers have told us that we will be getting the blue until Sunday (super for the batteries) and then snow will come in and we will have white falling on the ground and covering the sky for a few days straight.

Exercise forecast. Shoveling snow gives one a good work out! :blue thumb:

I want to play with some wiring in the greenhouses today and that sunshine will make it not too unpleasant in there and my fingers will still be able to bend. :) The temperature will probably rise to about -10c when it starts snowing on Sunday. Easy peasy!

You know, I cant even imagine what minus 21c feels like.

I think we are being spoilt a bit ATM, only fairly light overnight frosts for the time of year and rising to 8c isn't bad for clear sky weather in January.

Expected to get cloudier over the weekend but the sun is forecast to come out again next week.

We are up to 14c (real feel 11c) but it feels much cooler with the wind from the East at 27 km/h gusting to 50 km//h. It will be nice when it calms down a bit.

It is fun when it gets this cold because you can throw a cup of hot water in the air, and it will instantly burst into tiny ice particles. And if you find any leaves or such lying about, you can put them in a used but clean food tub with some water and a piece of string inserted part way. Let it freeze, and voila, you have a frozen water pane with a piece of nature to make it look pretty, and the string is to hang it.

                      Cold can be fun :)

edit- you could do that with the top surface of your bird bath.. :ideaIPB:

Ice lanterns! Basically, let some water freeze in a bucket, insert a smaller bucket and fill the sides with more water (and decorative things), let freeze, tip it out and insert a candle. Lovely :)

Also, in Finland hard freezes are great for washing jeans and other thick stuff that takes ages to dry indoors. Wet garments are hung outdoors, after a couple of hours they are frozen solid and taken indoors. The temperature difference means that the ice sublimates rather than melts so immediately evaporates leaving the garments dry and oh-so-fresh scented.

In full honesty I must admit that the very heavy frosts are brilliant when observed from a triple-glazed, fully insulated, cheaply centrally heated house where the temperature stays at constant +20 C. I much prefer these mild British winters that allow outdoors activities that don't seriously hurt when you breath, or kill you if the bus is late.

Regarding the water throwing game, apparently it was popular on tiktok and caused severe burns when some enthusiastic people tried throwing boiling water up in the air in slightly milder climates. Forgot to read the small print, I guess...

In my daughter's previous job in Canada she sometimes spent a number of days working outside in temperatures between -25C/-30C that's -13F/-22F. We don't really know what cold is here in Britain. The lowest temperature we've had since living here in Scotland has been -17C/1F but that was overnight.

Today started cloudy but bright and calm and by mid afternoon the sun was shining. 9C/48F
