WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

It was w..w...windy up there, very scary gusty this morning and the speed limit had not been reduced. To try and keep Ipswich from getting clogged up they now reduce the speed to 40 mph on days when previously the bridge would have been closed, but today despite 45 mph gusts it was still 60 mph and the lorries go charging across the bridge! I’d be interested to know whether the award winning designer planned for such scenarios?

Safe home now. I still have to cross it eight times a week but at least it will only be dark on two of those journeys now I am a part timer

Should be in the garden by 1.30 pm tomorrow, hurrah

I played with my new toys today. With the bench grinder I got for xmas I sharpened my lawnmower blade and secateurs. I mowed the lawn and cut all the blackberry briars out of my bushes. I then shredded the briars using my new shredder. I now have to work out what to do with the pieces.

I have had a Daphne outside in a pot so today we planted it in its final position. I also planted three Tree Lilies in a 100 lite container. Planted them a good foot deep.

 

It was lovely to be outside today, continuing to tidy the patio and deciding what changes I need to do to the garden later in the year

 

DID anyone sow any seeds yet??!?!

 

It's too early for me, I wouldn't have anywhere to keep them when they got big.

No not yet, got to wait for some compost and I can't help hubby with it for 2 weeks when I have my eye checked after having cataract surgery 2 weeks ago.

 

It was a nice afternoon so cut off some more leaves of the hellebores.

WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

The peppers I had sown a few weeks ago still show no signs of germinating. This is the new seeds so I figure it's just a matter of a few more days.

My catnip has come up so that is good!

And outside, all I did was inventory the stock of low flow irrigation parts that I have in one of the greenhouses. The snow is still over a foot deep and more (10") is expected tomorrow so I will probably only be goofing around with soil blocks inside.

OPINIONS PLEASE: My soil blocks are 2"x2"x2" squares, are there some plants that would do better with an elongated root shape? I was looking at some of the plastic ones online like this one
and I'd rather stick with my little blocks and not buy any more plastic. I'm thinking that if there are plants that must have space for long roots, I could maybe stack the blocks but which plants would need this set up?

 

I have Sweetpeas, Anthirrinums, Foxgloves and Laurentia all germinated in my potting shed. They have heat and are under lights.

 

It's so so so tempting - it seems like this season I am counting not weeks or days, but hours..

question --> if, for example, you are planting loads of tomato varieties but only one plant per variety - do you sow only 1 seed per variety or more.. and then inspect which is the strongest plant?

 

First day as a part-timer, home at 1.40pm, couldn’t help myself! Have sown radish and spring onions in 20 cell trays and three types of lettuce (cut-and-come-again) and some spinach, in 20 cell trays, all under clear lids and in the brick workshop on the table by the big window. It was showing 18 degrees in there today, don’t know about night temperatures but it’s not cold tonight, lows of 8 degrees.

Already have sweet peas and dwarf french beans germinating in the heated propagator.

It’s probably not going to end well but enjoying my time in the garden instead of in the office

Also carried on digging out the big bed between the main garden and the orchard, so many weeds and invasive plants, the roots go to Australia! Hope to get some turf to join the garden into one at some time in the summer, so many weeks of clearing still to be done.
