Is it indoors? Maybe the warmth is fooling it into growth. I keep mine just frost free at this time of year. I have had them trying to sprout if we get a few weeks of mild weather, they then stop when it gets cold again.

Thank you, it's been in a conservatory so maybe it's too warm in there for it. It's the first one I've ever grown so I'm not used to them.
Should I cut it back ?

I've got mine in the garage, but they are trying to make some growth.
They were covered in greenfly, so I cut mine off, I think its too soon for them to be making growth.

I'm not so sure about cutting back, I did that once and not many new sprouts appeared that season. If you can find a cooler place I'd be inclined to move it there. If you left it in your conservatory it could get big by the spring, I know someone on here had his under growlamps and had flowers over-winter. You need a fair bit of space though.

The ones in the ground get left there, the potted ones lobbed in the greenhouse. Both are chopped down at the end of the season. If I remember then sometimes I mulch over the outdoor ones

I cut mine down as they always seem to be smothered in green fly at this time of the year.
              Thinking about virus being transmitted.
I'm thinking if the tubers are fairly small then there could be a problem with them producing more shoots in a couple of months.
Makes you wonder if they would be better having all the soil knocked off at the end of the season and stored pretty much like dahlias, at least you would know how many potential shoots you have for the new year.

Thanks for all replies and help. I think I'll put it in an unheated perspex shelter at the side of the garage.

Should be ok there Michael, they are slightly hardier than dahlia tubers I think.

I'm going to try to get some tubers, that were gifted to me last fall, to sprout sometime in March? Is that the right time to start? These have all the soil knocked off them and are nestled in shredded paper and in a dark cold cellar.

March sounds good, make sure the tubers dont shrivel too much, they are best kept firm but dormant.
They grow quite fast once they get higher temperatures and moisture.

Thank you @pete. I'll go down there and mist the paper so there is a little dampness. I've got my fingers crossed that these will work out.

There is nothing better than a free plant :)

If you get more than one shoot you can divide the tuber, but wait until they have new roots.

Aha I didn't think about the root situation. I will wait because I love the foliage. I've also saved some 4 O'clock tubers as an experiment. Kinda reminded me of skinny potato tubers.
