I'm glad you've worked it out, it's still confusing to me :noidea:

Now that does depend on shape
      for a cube 1m*1m*1m = 1 cubic meter. Surface area = 6*1m*1m = 6m^2
      for a sphere V = 1 cubic meter. Surface area = 4.8 m^2

No, only works with a cube Nigel and its not total surface area but area of one face.

If you slice the 1 m^3 shape into say 10cm (0.1m) thick slices and measure the area covered by the slices you will get 10 m^2. This is easy for a 1m*1m*1m cube and then gets harder for a sphere, or a cone and as for irregular shapes

A sphere only has one face.

            But its not a cube.

            I'm not into spheres.

The atmo-sphere is getting a bit confusing. Does it depend on how far from the centre of gravity you are?

Yes, it looks like the squared measurement relates to the footprint of a cube.

Now children, for today's lesson you have to work out as many reasons as you can think of as to why you would want to know the answer. :blue thumb:
You're welcome to use Lateral, Divergent or Convergent forms of thinking about it. :ideaIPB:

I believe the question itself is incorrect, as clearly the result depends on the mass and the velocity of the observer.

I may be a little overweight but I'm not a mass and I certainly don't do velocity nowadays!!! :nonofinger:

Well as others have said you can't equate volume to area. I can't work out what the conversion site was doing 1 cubic metre does not equal any number of square metres.
Now somebody will have fun if ordering concrete for a driveway. Drive is 10 square metres, so convert to... this equals 10 cubic metres of concrete !!!!! :hate-shocked: You can build a nuclear shelter with that.:heehee:
