@Sheal the only time I see birds on the ground is when it is not frozen and there's a worm smorgasbord. I like the way the robins thump the ground with their beaks to mimic rainfall and trick the wrigglers into surfacing. :)

I didn't get out to the feeder yesterday. I'll do that today.

@Tomcat, at Arne RSPB reserve where I am a volunteer. There were around 50 in late October/November but some have moved on leaving this flock of around 26, normally here until mid March. They can be seen feeding around this area of Poole harbour at low tide. They are yet to breed here in Dorset but we are hoping, one day.

@hydrogardener. Just some info. Due to prevailing winds migrating US birds sometimes get blown across the Atlantic in gales and this year has been exceptional. Not only Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs have been seen here as well as a long staying Belted Kingfisher. This week I have seen distantly, vagrant US Ring Billed and Bonaparte's Gulls and last month a Ring Billed Duck. This week an American Robin has been found in Sussex! most small birds would be seen in the West not in the South East. Obviously it has, like the Kingfisher, attracted birders from all over the country, although I have not been tempted.

That is pretty amazing. I would imagine the little robin is lonely at this point. :cry3: Thanks for the information.
