From ‘69, for me a wonderful tune from what could be regarded a ‘supergroup’.The mighty King Crimson...

Interesting, I've never actually listened to any of his solo stuff before, rather good! For me, that first Suede album was just absolutely fantastic and they never produced anything quite as good after that. Blur are probably my favourites from the "Britpop" era. :)

The TV series of Jam was even better and Julia Davis is probably my favourite female comedian ever! :love30: So many brilliant shows including Human Remains, Nighty Night, Camping, Hunderby and the Lizzie and Sarah pilot! If you like the Chris Morris/Julia Davis stuff I think you'd enjoy Stewart Lee, some of his material is similarly dark but wittier IMO. Try searching "Stewart Lee UKIP" on YouTube, he takes anti-immigration sentiment to its extreme logical conclusion in that bit. And that comedy bit is DEFINITELY not GC-friendly! :yikes:

One of my closest mates would play that album over and over and over again when we were teenagers, so the overexposure to it just killed it for me at the time, a bit like Blur being everywhere in the 90s. Now I see it as a decent and interesting album, although I can't exactly say I'm a fan.

For me it was Iron Maiden's Seventh Son album when it comes to rock/metal, I was 10 when it came out and still love it now that I'm 43! Perhaps that says something about my current level of maturity...:biggrin: First track's a bit intense, but it gets better and more experimental after that!

This week's listening has almost exclusively been the often unintentionally hilarious Karl Pilkington. The XFM stuff is yet another brilliant "non CG-friendly" audio thing that can't be posted here, not because of Karl, but because of Ricky's extremely regular swearing! :frown:

Yeah, and he's pretty amazing as a writer as well, the depth of some of the stuff he has produced is life-affirmingly touching and inspiring to me, impossible to watch without shedding a tear... :)

Great at combining music with film too, these were just perfect in my book, the lyrics of the Radiohead song put across such a strong respect for the elderly and to generally try to see that there is always more to people than we realise. Not a fan of Coldplay, but the use of "Fix You" in Derek was genius too!

Hiya @Nikolaos . I think Suede went under my radar at the time. It wasn’t until I saw Brett perform on an edition of ‘Songbook’ that made me take notice.

I was of course familiar with this tune, but to me, this performance was simply magical. If you’re interested, the complete edition (Songbook) featuring Brett is available on YouTube. I really should check out Suede (I know, I’m bad :)).
King Crimson. As a 50’s child, I’d been brought up on mostly a diet of tunes (pop) I heard on the radio, bearing in mind we had nowhere near the amount of stations we have today, so no real choice other than mainstream. That said, to me, pop was way better than it is today...just my opinion. Maybe I’d had a sheltered life, but my recollection is that we had an explosion of rock and progressive music in the late 60’s which came as quite a shock, in a good way (by that time I was buying my own music/albums). Bands like Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, King Crimson and many more were all part of that. I still have many of those original vinyls :)
I never really latched on to the Brit-pop thing, but I must say I really like Pulp, I think ‘Different Class’ is wonderful.

For me some of those mainstream 60s bands were great, I even thought The Beatles did some interesting stuff, but it was the more avant-garde and experimental music produced in that time that really blew my mind! There was a period in my mid-twenties where I would buy a new 60s album every week and feel like I was exploring an entirely new genre or musical approach. It was a bit like the thrill of rediscovering music for the first time as a child and I loved that feeling! Stuff like Captain Beefheart, The Greatful Dead, The Incredible String Band, The Doors, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Band. These were bands that even went beyond the notion of a concept album in the sense that their entire output was its own little universe, you know? Pink Floyd pretty much perfected the concept album IMO, but I almost felt like these were concept artists! :) I just don't feel that happens nowadays because there is always the concern with producing the next successful single in most artists' minds!

Anyway, tonight's listening for me is the underrated 70s jazz masterpiece, Sextant by Herbie Hancock! Someone said that these guys were doing 90s ambient music 20 years earlier and that is such a spot-on evaluation! :love30:
