WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

It could be what you mixed it with.

 

I mix the Coir with Home made Compost & Perlite.

 

I've done nothing but tie everything down ready for another 2 storms and more rain due later in the week

 

My wife took delivery of 30 Bluebells, in the green, so it was out to get them planted before the weather set in for the next few days.

 

Whilst the wind had died down (it is supposed to get windy again later) I planted the Bright Salmon and Red & White Brugmansias in terracotta pots and planted six of the ten Pepino doce (Solanum muricatum) rootings in a terracotta pot to develop more root structure. The other four did not develop to my liking so tossed them but I had only ordered six and got ten, so hey ho!

I am not 100% sure how the Brugmansia colours will turn out but they are cuttings off supposedly the seller's plant. They may well be a surprise but I look forward to the blooms. I still have to have my pink Brugmansia bloom, but it is a cutting off my own pink one from years ago.

At the moment my favourite plants are Brugmansia. Hibiscus and Mandevilla. Of course I love all my other special plants too.

 

We took delivery of a Virginia Creeper yesterday so we took advantage of a break in the weather to plant it out. Before the snow comes overnight!

 

Did the last of my winter cutting back today, started way back in november and been slowly doing a bit now and then between other jobs.
Of course, by July you wont see where I have been and the jungle will be back.

 

Jungles are nice.

 

Yesterday hubby got me a bag of compost so today got my propagaters down from upstairs and turned one on to warm up some compost. Potted on 9 rooted geranium cuttings and some rooted cuttings of eurigeron.

 

Nothing outside because of the weather. But I've sown the chillie and Snapdragon seeds and potted up 9 lily bulbs in 3 pots.

 

Yesterday I pruned a rose bush that had been part-pruned last autumn, so that it wouldn't be damaged by the expected wind. I had to sacrifice its beautiful bright red hips, I will plant the seeds later. It needed pruning around now anyway. And I brought a lot of things indoors yesterday, couldn't bring everything in, I tried to secure things as best I could. Plants and plantpots all look ok at the moment, plants blowing around a lot but undamaged. I will put everything back tomorrow.

 

Keen to understand: what potting compost do folks use. I've been using a general peat free compost recently, and germination has been poor in some cases. The compost looks coarse - and has visible chunks of wood in it still which is pretty far from ideal. That's two different makes as well.

But I've not found any peat-free potting compost - and it's always in tiny bags as well as far as I can see.

Any thoughts? Should I just sieve the general stuff?

 

Are you a bit restricted as to what makes of compost are available on Jersey?
Or can you get most of the ones we get over here, or do you get French stuff?
