    Did it stay dead?

I'm plagued with self-seeded alder trees, and for years have had an inaccessible one between two garages. One garage is now gone and I can get at the tree (all the branches have been removed) and I need to kill the trunk.

Can you chop it down now? Wait till spring and use sbk tree stump killer.

Any unwanted trees I cut down during the winter and drill half inch holes down into the stump.
With a funnel I fill the holes with neat SBK and seal the holes with putty or something similar, I use wooden pellets..
It might start to grow a bit in spring but I find most die off after making some shoots.

Not personally, but I could probably get it done.

I thought with all chemical methods you're supposed to do it before the sap starts rising??

Plan B is that the concrete slab in front of it is going to be broken up and removed later in the year, so if the digger driver thinks he can hoik it out without collapsing my neighbour's garage.....

Most chemical methods will work better and quicker when the tree is in active growth. Also many chemicals are absorbed through the foliage as well as the roots.

Looking at the pictures; is it yours or your neighbour's tree?

Well in my opinion that information is converse, applying any weedkiller during a plant's dormant stage will be ineffective. I think thay are advising not chopping a tree down when the sap is rising and applying it immediately. In that case the sap could bring up the product to the surface.

If you cut the tree to a stump now you won't get that issue because sap rises when the roots push water and sugar to the branches. Cut it now and It will be in equilibrium by the spring and the product will work best as any new buds will be targeted.

I've always done stumps in the winter, admittedly if you are spraying green growth you need to do it when the plant is growing to get absorption.
I'm not sure but I think stump treatment in winter is about getting the actual wood to absorb the product before the sap starts rising.

Technically his, as it seeded itself his side of the fence, and 'twas he who lopped off all the branches, but he wants it no more than I.

I understand, let us know how you get on. It is much bigger than I imagined, it will need a couple of treatments probably.

It would be better to cut it down some more if you can.
                          The shorter the better.

I am getting it cut down. Checked with my neighbour that he doesn't want it. A month or so ago I gave a load of logs away on Freecycle from a laurel I'd cut down - the guy who took them rocked up with a chain saw to shorten some of the longer ones. He has a large log burner - not just some cosy thing in the living room - it powers his central heating, hot water... so he is always in need of wood. I texted him and said it was his if he came and cut it down and he said yes.
