Blight Resistant Tomatoes

Order a load of packets to reduce the unit cost.

 

There is crimson blush as well. Not tried it myself.

 

If it helps, Chadwick Cherry (pictured) was my last cordon standing outdoors during the blightmare.

Lizzano F1, sold as blight resistant, stood up pretty well. I had to cut off one manky stem but then the plant continued on as normal.

 

Well, there was very little that tasted as good as the seed catalogues boasted, but I think that was to do with the wet weather and lack of sun. CC was pleasant and well worth another try. Lizzano... again, perfectly nice but unremarkable.

Flavour standouts for me were Black Russian, Moskvitch, Rosella Cherry, Lylia Cerisette and Bloody Butcher. BB was a real workhorse for me. It held up well against blight, too. I'll never know exactly how long/well any of my plants would have resisted blight had I left them, as there came a point when I'd had enough of constant leaf checks and rain watching, and tore up the lot. My indoor ripening station was quite the sight to behold!

I have grown Cherrola for the last two or three years. The taste is reminiscent of ‘old-fashioned’ Gardener’s Delight. To complete the picture, I grow all my tomatoes outside and last year, was very lucky not to lose a single one to blight in what I believe was a bad blight year.

I was in my local independent garden centre the other day and also spotted Crokini so I just had to try it! I trial various new tomato types each year and give each at least two seasons before discarding or retaining them on my ‘must grow’ list.

 

I have been growing Skykomish from Real Seeds which is supposed to be blight resistant and is orange. Also Primabella and no blight on either yet. Skykomish mild flavoured and Primabella sharper. I think flavour depends a lot on how they are grown however.

 

Will definitely try Honey Moon next year.

 

to revive this after this years awful blight in his garden: Any toms people tried that they found to be blight resistant this year? I will see what I can try.

I grew this year:
Latah
Galina
Rosella Cherry
Krafts Purple Sugar
Rons Carbon Copy
Sweet Million F1
San Marzano 2

They were all doing decently into august, small signs of blight from fairly early on but was enough to remove some leaves, then in late august we had some rains that must have infected most of the plants with LB.

Rosella, RCC and Sweet Million turned to mush instantaneously and I ended up getting only a few fruit from one of the dark cherries which tastes great up until the rains hit.
Based on Eatenbyweasels description it was Krafts purple sugar that survived the longest, one of those three genuinely died so quickly I didnt notice it was infected; possible it was patient 0 for my entire garden.

Latah didnt hold on that well. It did produce the earliest but only by a few days.
Galina and San Marzano 2 did the best, both eventually dying to it but they both produced a good number of green toms which are ripening in my kitchen. SM2 tastes extremely mild and is very pulpy, I guess its a sauce tomato so to be expected.
Galina is ok but not as good as the good store tomatoes :/

Try again next year!

I think ill try fewer and maybe grow more of another crop, maybe tomatillos?
