Yes the airport, presumably the one left intact because the Russians wanted to use it. I have no idea how big the Ukrainian airforce is, but we are not hearing anything about it. Just seeing armoured vehicles flooding across the border unhindered in one piece of footage. Admittedly good knowledge of what is happening is scarce, but telling the population to arm themselves with molotov cocktails does sound pretty desperate.
I guesstimated earlier that the Ukrainian govt would be gone by Saturday evening. There was never a doubt about it comparing armed forces. The world has hung them out to dry
My heart bleeds for Ukraine. That horrifying clip in the lunchtime time news showing a car being driven over by an armoured vehicle/ tank, and thank god miraculously the driver was pulled out alive!
Yes - I agree. We’ve seen with the Dutch plane how that could play out. There are some flights I’d not do right now if they went too close…
I have the same instinct but also not enough knowledge or experience to really know what the right answer is. Military escalation seems like a very bad idea. But also just caving in and allowing annexation and occupation by Russia is quite far from optimal…
Me too. I feel strongly for the Ukrainians. 3 days ago, going to work and living normal lives. Today: full scale war by an army of occupation which has no rules.
When does it stop? Poland? Germany? France.. UK? I don't disagree he's now bonkers, like Yeltsin, and he's always been resentful of the Soviet era passing but that does not, can not, mean the world let this pass unchallenged
I think we all see it that way it's just how do you achieve that without massive escalation. Sanctions seem to be the only non military weapon we have.
It's all the world has the appetite for at least. Except Germany and Italy it seems. There is no good solution here, everything is going to hurt.
I think we need to find a way of making the Rouble worthless in the world, but getting that kind of agreement world wide would be difficult I think.
Ironically I think the only solution can come from Russia itself. The people to realise their leadership is mad and power crazed, that this is a shrinking world, more depleted and crowded every day and the only pathway is together. They are the only ones that are able to do it.
I'll prefer to wait for hell to freeze over, hope I'm wrong but Putin is cast in the same mould as the cold war bunch. He's trying to turn the clock back. I was only thinking today, for probably more than half my life Ukraine was actually part of the USSR, and rightly or wrongly back then thought of as Russia.
