Crikey, the lyrics from this tune are more pertinent than ever

“The wall on which the prophets wrote
      Is cracking at the seams
      Upon the instruments of death
      The sunlight brightly gleams
When every man is torn apart
      With nightmares and with dreams
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
      The silence drowns the screams?
      Confusion will be my epitaph
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known
      Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind, I see
Is in the hands of fools”

I notice some talk of the mighty ‘Zep’ :)

One (of many) of my favourite tunes. The drumming is off the scale, imo...

I can’t say I’m seriously into folk, but this chap was very high in my estimation, back in the day. A song taken from an album I still play quite regularly. Apparently, him and Jimmy Page are good friends.

See, I never considered Deep Purple as a heavy metal band. To me, they were just hard rock, although I can see why some might make the connection. Funnily enough, I can’t say I’m a fan of metal.

A funny thing, many say that The Beatles were overrated, I would say the opposite, even though I was moving in a different direction towards the end of their career as a band. The impact they had at the time, considering what was going on musically, can’t be underestimated. To me, they were songsmiths above all others. I remember when my kids were young, they seemed instinctively to know the tunes, it was like they were hard-wired into their DNA :)
I do consider myself lucky to be around when music underwent massive changes, so many bands making great/different music, looking to push the boundaries in both direction and musicianship. I look around now and wonder where have all the bands gone, what’s the next big thing? Yes, there are some standout artists, but it mostly seems very drab now. Yes, I know, I must be getting old...

Of course, when it comes to blues, I guess Led Zep had all the plaudits at the time, but this band were pretty good, back in the day...

I don't think the Beatles were overrated Freddy and I agree they were great song writers but...I never liked them and still don't listen to their music. I suppose I was going in a much different direction at the time, starting with Tyrannosaurus Rex (later T.Rex), then deep into rock.

I'm the same era as your good self and agree that bands back then were pushing the boundaries, experimenting with what they could produce. I think the difference between then and now is, there is no real musicianship in current music. There's nothing that stands out and gives your eardrums a treat.

A tune that made quite an impression on me at the time. I was 8 & 3/4 when it was released...

A band that have been accused of being over grandiose. I don’t care about that, to me they just made great music. A tune that still sends shivers up my spine...
