WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Gave the grass, front and back, its first cut of the year, it was getting pretty long.

Potted up 25 broad bean seeds and bunged them in the greenhouse, as soon as they germinate I'll put them in the cold frame.

 

Seed sowing and related playing with compost indoors. I re-sowed some unsuccessful seeds, pricked out Agastache, sowed some more herbs and a bit of this and that. Re-potted some houseplants. Heroically labelled some of the pots (labelling... pffft... of course anyone will recognise oregano and thyme seedlings at a glance. Why bother! ).

On my travels into the garage I stumbled on an Amaryllis bulb on a shelf, and as it didn't feel that dead, potted it up. It has been there without soil or protection for about two years.

Fished out self- seeded tomatoes from various locations and potted them on. Last summer I grew Sweet Olive baby plum toms, very vigorous plants and great fruit. When I was sorting the 2m plants out, hidden fruit flew around a bit and now I find seedlings absolutely everywhere. Honestly, I had an empty bucket nearby and this spring filled it with compost to carry into the kitchen for seed sowing, and what do I get? Feeble basil seedlings and sturdy tomato seedlings.

It's perhaps a slight overstatement to say that I have "learnt from my mistakes", but at least now I only sow 1-2 potfuls of things that I want just for fun. Sage is nice, but I do not need ten pots of it.

"Learning from mistakes" approach didn't apply for Cucamelons that have massively failed for three years in a row, I did exactly what I did in the previous years and am now expecting a bumper crop.

Like you I have made an effort to label too but whether the labels stay put and more importantly stay put on their original pots is another question.

 

Weeding in the back garden and planning on removing some of the red currant bushes that haven't produced anything in the last few years and planting some blackcurrants in their place.

 

Had my first go at laying cement. Not my finest moment.

 

I use a bit of freezer sticky tape and permanent marker. Works really well, but the challenge comes at potting-on time. The plants move but the labels stay, resulting in a jumble of clearly and neatly, but incorrectly, labelled seedlings.

Gardening isn't easy is it......full of problems to solve.....but that is my problem I don't solve them!

I've got a large plastic dustbin that I use as a settlement tank before the water from my pond goes into the filter box.
I've just emptied it onto the garden a whole dustbin, almost, of brown slimy sludge.

I only empty it once a year but its surprising how much sludge it stops from either blocking the filter or going back into the pond.

 

I had a play with cement today and that may not have been my finest moment either @Jocko ! Decided to have a go at making a bird bath, used cement and ballast, shovelled it into a lined, upturned metal bin lid, squished it down in the middle with a trug full of sand, levelled the circumference, then thought I’d be artistic and add some beach pebbles around the edge for decoration (as if the birds care!), now I have a lime green trug on top of a cement bin lid with pebbles having a bath!

It may take a few weeks to dry/cure, but I’m leaving it be for now and keeping my fingers crossed.
