I bought a bucket of growmore a couple of weeks ago, managed to get one from last year stock, the new stock for the same product was £3 more.
Yara used to make most of it's fertilizer, certainly the Nitrogen based ones, using Norwegian hydro-electric resources which in theory shouldn't be affected by oil/gas prices. I know they went on a major acquisition phase in recent years and bought out many old well known names, I guess it's those older brands that use fossil fuel energy and will be hit with escalating fuel costs. Bad news for you. Like many gardeners I am considering how to cut down, maybe more comfrey tea etc.
I am trying to figure out the why of this reality. I realize that Canada probably has a smaller impact, overall, with their sanctions on Russia but why the heel dragging on the part of our allies? Am I missing something here? "Canada is turning out to be one of the most aggressive countries at levying sanctions on Russia. As per a count by Bloomberg News, Canada has sanctioned 413 individual Russian entities since the invasion, as compared to 118 for the Americans and just 16 for the U.K. We’re also the only country to ban imports of Russian oil (although this was relatively easy since we don’t really buy any)."
I don't know how this sanctioning individuals works, if that is what you are referring to, but for some reason we in the UK are having problems with our laws. We have a pretty ponderous legal system full of dusty old books and dustier people. I can see the outcome of it all in 5 years time, if we don't get it right, paying out billions in compensation and legal fees to the very people we are trying to hurt.
I think it's to put pressure on the oligarchy to in turn pressure Putin to stop. The UK is ever so good at tying itself in legal knots then creating more legal cordage to place on top! Or it could just be slow because the government really like foreign cash and are reluctant to see it go!
Yeah I think I worded it wrong, I meant how it works in the UK with it being slower than other countries. They can take away their yachts in France in the blink of an eye apparently, but we have to put new laws in via Parliament and then I'm guessing the crusty old Lords will have their say, then there will be a 6 month warning that we are going to seize their assets, I think they are trying to get that down to 28days,and then .................... hang on, what have they done with all their money. I think there's a lot of bribery and corruption going on but we will never know.
There is the nub of the matter. I don't think he will be allowed to press the big red button marked 'Do not press'. But, if we capitulate to his demands every time he mentions nukes - where does it stop? He's already said that he knows that Russia would not stand a chance against NATO - that's why he mentioned nukes. Shame that Ronnie shelved the 'star wars' project.
Russian oil/gas - that's the problem here in Europe - Germany and others I believe are reliant upon Russian oil/gas. Neither Putin (who gets a load of dosh from selling to Europe) or Europe (who need the energy to keep warm) are going to rock the boat. We (UK) get most of our gas from Norway and only something like 5% of our energy comes from Russia. The US (who supply 20% of the worlds oil - compared to 11% for Russia) are talking about banning Putins oil/gas. The only way they will get Europe to agree is if the US back filled by increasing production/releasing their reserves. Russia is being bashed - they shut down their stock exchange and haven't opened it up yet - because they know that all their shares will fall through the floor. Sanctions are working - but not as fast as everyone would wish.
I'm not sure if anyone will stop him pushing that button , but I think we draw the line when he crosses that NATO line, otherwise what is the point of having it or anyone being a member. If he crosses that line he knows he is out of line and then the full force can be brought down on him. He saw, and sees Ukraine as part of Russia, and in my ignorance years ago, so did I, to be honest. His invasion is basically a reaction to countries wanting to join NATO. Best way to stop them, invade them before they get a chance.
The Russian government never moved away from the Soviet mindset. Absolute control over all aspects of life in the name of mother Russia. Putin will absolutely give the nuclear order if backed into a corner, we're relying on some saner people not to go through with it. Maybe there's a mercury leak in the water at the Kremlin or something?! We nor Europe can afford a war. Life is about to get really expensive, a war will cripple us. That's one reason everybody is avoiding boots on the ground and hoping that sanctions achieve something
There seems to be a lot of profiteering, oil prices are still below their historic high in 2008 yet pump prices have rocketed.
I've just about had enough of Boris now, its time he went. The corruption cant go on much longer can it. Boris Johnson’s Russian crony Evgeny Lebedev got peerage after spies dropped warning | News | The Sunday Times
I was in Thailand in September 2000 when the farmers for action caused many fuel stations to run out. My parents contacted me as they were concerned that I wouldn't have enough fuel when I returned, I had already filled up prior to parking at Manchester airport. Don't think we will ever see those types of protests ever again, we're too soft and just accept it nowadays, these big companies know it.
I'm not too sure, I can see a lot of social unrest coming up, with many families running out of money to heat their houses and put food on their kid's plates. If they aren't given enough support there could be mass anti-government protests not just against the big companies.
I have to admit I'm planning on growing more veg this year and get them into the borders as well. The prices are going to skyrocket and I have no clue if they'll ever come down again. We've gotten very used to things being cheap in the UK and I doubt we're prepared for the hikes
