Morning everyone. It's a nice sunny morning in Norwich, and even a little warmer than of late.

I need some advice about moving a tree please. I have a Japanese Maple which is now over thirty years old,

It was in a container and was only about 1 mtre high.

We moved in 2014, and I planted it in the ground. It is now about 2mtres high, and I have to move it, as we are having work done in the garden.

It's well rooted, and I think moving it will break the tap root, and I don't know if it will survive.

Has anyone experience of this, and did it survive please?

Sorry, I see this has been asked before...

      Hi

should be fine to move ... I would measure 18inches in a circle from the trunk then on the outside of the circle dig a spade trench deep all around . .....

once the trench is dug out from the base of the trench under cut all the way around (cutting through the roots) with the spade sliding underneath to the trunk , once all this is done use a huge plastic sheet or a old bed sheet and lift the shrub with the spade until the sheet is totally underneath and then tie it up to create a bundle .. this will help keep the now "rootballed shrub" soil together and easy to move

.... place in the same depth hole and then remove the sheet carefully as to not to break up the root ball fill in any gaps , make sure you give a good water every week until the autumn ... dont feed the plant just let it get established ... I know a faff but it does work I have done it myself on several occasion ... you have a bout 10 days to move it as spring is on its way and better to do before it breaks in to leaf

        Thanks Spruce for your reply.

I don't have that much room round it, but I will do my best. Hoping to move it at the weekend, weather permitting.

        Hi Sruce.

My son managed to lift the Maple, but as there was very little room around it, there really is no root ball to re-plant it.

So I have bought a new tree. It's an Acer Palmatum Butterfly, and the information I have about it, sounds very nice. It's four feet tall, and I found it in a local garden centre.

I have to tell you, that the tree that I thought was not going to survive, has been re-planted, and is doing very well, with Lots of new leaf growth. I like this nice sunny weather, even if I have to water everything...
