Best Supplier Of Compost 2022

The jacks magic i bought a few months ago is a bit rubbish, fair number of stones and slugs too. So i bought some miracle grow multi purpose, seems ok although there is a fair bit of straw/wood fibre in it. I'll take a trip down the m74 this week to visit a wholeasaler and buy some sinclair/levington advance bags as well.

Notice a few of you have just bought Jacks Magic, which has been our favorite for the last few years, but when looking for somewhere local with stock seems Westland have now changed its formula to a 50:50 mix with 'Bio3' , whatever that is ?

Looks like most of their compost range is also using this Bio3 mix as well.

Has anyone bought any of this new type of Jacks and can say what its like ?

It's wood fibre, we are using it also to both the retail and commercial sector but at a 70/30 blend, so 70% peat to 30% wood fibre.

A couple of pictures of what it looks like when it is delivered to me.



We set seeds off in coir compost but we have already started potting on patio plants using this blend.



As you can see by the image below, the plants are rooting nicely.

 

My lad is loaded ready for his trip up the M74 (Lanark) on Monday, full load of mainly John Innes Compost with a couple of pallets of Dolomite lime and a pallet of Leek & Onion compost.
We also supply a wholesaler in Dundee, however they collect from our yard when they are delivering garden sundries in our area.

 

Theres a lot garden centres in that area, I go to CTS as they tend to cater for wholesale but also have a retail shop, so a bit of a different selection

 

That's where we are delivering to tomorrow, they do stock a wide range for both the retail and commercial sector.

They normally hold a trade show at their premises every year, due to Covid I don't think there has been one for the last couple of years.

 

I used to live in The Clyde Valley and got much of my garden equipment from CTS. I have a yellow hose which must be getting on for 40 years old, lives out all year and still going strong.
I call the large number of garden centres in the area garden supermarkets! The majority sell exactly the same plants most of which get transported in direct from Europe, which have never seen outside, being grown under glass and with heat. People then are surprised when their newly bought plants don’t thrive in our climate in March/ April.
We sold our house to the owner of the biggest garden centre in the area who proudly told me he knew basically nothing about plants and cared not. His hope every year, his words not mine,was that it would be really cold and frosty over the Easter period as during this time droves would come from the likes of Glasgow to buy bedding plants, plant them in their gardens, they’d die due to being frosted and would then have to go and buy more. Double sales, happy days for the garden “ supermarkets”

Thanks for that info, are there any retail coir composts for seeds that you can recommend ?

Have you tried the Jacks 70:30 mix with any seeds ?

 

Best place to get coir compost will be the hydroponic suppliers, that's if they have any.

Coir Compost Perlite Mix Jiffy Tref – The Garden Superstore

I know some will think the above is a bit on the pricey side, not really when you take into account the thousands of miles to ship the coir, plus 30% of the mix is perlite.

I am not in a position to recommend any supplier or brand, I have no experience of using other brands as we only use our own brand composts, sorry.

 

Most tomatoes pricked out and in c3" pots, spending days in the greenhouse.

 

I wizzed into Aldi in a million hurries to get a bag of multi purpose. I did not have time to go and get my preferred Jack’s Magic altho not tried this years which may be pants. The Aldi stuff looked not too bad, hmm well if you don’t water it almost in a hourly basis it goes like concrete. We all know that annoying habit of the compost being basically waterproof as you try in vain to get the stuff wet again. My advice, avoid Aldi multipurpose unless what you are sowing/ planting into it is happy with Sahara Desert conditions. Will be making time to go and get some Jack’s this week.
