My point was it didn't do Grenfell tower much good.

      Cor :yikes:.

£100 a month on the current higher rates here. Yes, the bungalow is well insulated and a quick burst of central heating warms it up. The conservatory on the back is also useful - open the door and the heat accumulated during the day floods into the bungalow.

My mind remains boggled :rolleyespink: - I can't comprehend how someone could use that much energy.

I suppose the other thing is that I was raised in a very cold house - no central heating - and very little other heating - so I have a 'robust' tolerance for being cold - like Elsa from Frozen . What's warm to me is cold to others...

And also the outside. When the Council were promoting solar power - they were able to insulate the outside of solid walls - finishing with a pebble dash or smooth plaster. I think it was for those pre-fab house type thingies.

Me too! In the last month I've been checking our consumption. I heat my greenhouse over winter and the energy meter tells me that is averaging £2 a week electric. We have a couple of electric under floor heating systems, one in our bathroom is switched off and a small one in an ensuite which I've turned down and adjusted the times so it's on for an hour morning and evening. That only uses a few pence an hour I think. All our lighting is LED but admittedly we do have the living room well lit as we both sit and read. We don't have a high heat setting on our CH, around 19 to 21c. Our daughter has her radiator switched off anyway. Today with the sun shining we have our patio doors open as it's too warm. It's a mystery how we use so much compared to others.

The one poor thing in our house is we have practically no loft insulation. It is a thin 75mm layer of vermiculite. We are getting a quote for it all to be improved to a modern standard, but as all our loft is boarded I'm expecting the quote to be large.

We use a lot of gas and electric. Mrs Shiney can't stand being cold (spent many years in a very hot climate) and our heating is on 24/7 as I'm up and around all night. Underfloor heating in kitchen is on permanently at 70F and bathroom is on permanently with no thermostat (low power system).

Summerhouse underfloor is on permanently but have now dropped that by 6C. Propagator in greenhouse is on permanently but have dropped the temperature slightly - we overwinter plants in there and the cat sleeps in there all night and most of the day :cat-kittyandsmiley:. We're making other efficiencies as well. We never bothered when costs were lower. :noidea:

I really like the way all the politicians are rabbiting on about renewables, being self sufficient in oil, and nuclear power.
None of that will make one little bit of difference to the bloke in the street.

We will still pay world prices if the oil comes from the North Sea or from the Gulf, electricity will cost the same if it comes from a bloody windmill or a nuclear power plant.

We are stuffed whichever way you look at it.

Look at our stupid prime minister. There he is telling people, yup Canada will help with power needs, well, when green energy is available. What a horses petuty. All the oil we have in the heart of the country and stupid won't allow the pipelines to get to market! We could ship enough oil to totally replace the need for russian stuff.

Until there is an affordable way to get green energy to everyone, we should be further developing scrubbers for the way we already manufacture our power. Even just using gas power plants to replace coal would make a humungous difference.

Nuclear power is cheap but maintaining the grid to deliver it will always be the biggest part of the price on our bill.

that's my new 'word of the day'....

It's not just power we need to be self sufficient in - 6 new nuke power stations on the cards apparently. We need to be more than 60% self sufficient in food. What with Ukraine and Russia being major grain exporters.

We need to support our farmers more - guy on TV saying that edible oils and now eggs are likely to be in short supply. I don't know about anyone else - but I purchase 'for farmers' goods from Morrisons - it's not much - but I'm trying to do something.

As the saying goes - 'it is only when the last fish is hauled from the sea and the last tree felled, that we will realise we can't eat money'.

Don't think I'll benefit from the new nuclear power stations, I mean how many years do they take to build.

Am I being synical, but since this war nearly everything we eat came from Russia or Ukraine.
