I’m fighting a rearguard action against getting a smart meter too. I was fortunate and got a fixed price deal for 2 years before the massive price rise last year. I will try not to sound too smug! However, I am now getting enough requests to fit a smart meter from Eon Next to no longer need newspaper to light our wood burning stoves. I am ignoring all of them for the foreseeable future. I am convinced these meters are not for our benefit but expect there will be some sort of reverse “white meter” tariff brought in whereby when demand is high, the price of electric will go up with the meters providing the information. That old expression about “no such thing as a free lunch” springs to mind. I am far too cynical to believe the power companies are giving us something for free for our own benefit:th scifD36:.

@hailbopp I'm sure @CanadianLori can enlighten you on that. It's what they have done in Canada. :rolleyespink:

I don't need a meter to tell me that if I switch off a light or turn my heating down I'm going to save power.

That's because you haven't realised that they are trying to make you more dexterous. :ideaIPB: You would then be able to hold the pressure washer with both hands whilst also using your hands to operate your phone.

Really@shiney! I did not know that about Canada. That was quite a good guess on my behalf:). Looks like sandwiches for Christmas dinner and going to bed early if it is cold and foggy ( conditions when electric demand peaks as told to me by a director of a power company). Big snag, what don’t you get when it is foggy? Wind:doh:

Here is what happens with the smart meter here.

It is smart at dividing up the day so as to bill you extra during the day. We have three "time of use" rates. Peak (high) Mid peak and Off peak.

Off peak is between 7 at night and 7 in the morning and all weekend and statutory holidays.
They change the mid and off pricing depending on if it is summer or winter.

Winter High peak is 7-11 in the morning (when our central heating is running since it is 30 below outside) and 5-7 at night and the afternoon
                    11-5 is mid peak

Summer High peak is switched to 11p.m. - 5 p.m. (when you want to use air conditioning) and mid is between 7-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.

The high peak is double the price of the low peak.

So they nail you for cooking your breakfast or supper at a "normal hour". Imagine what this means to people with school age children?

Smart meters are just smart billing machines! No, ours don't explode because when it comes to getting money out of us, quality goes into the equipment. And we were given no choice about the meters either.

It will come here at some point @CanadianLori ,it's just those of us who are holding out that are stopping it.
I wouldn't be surprised if they brought similar charges in over here, but they would put you on the high rate 24/7 if you want to keep the old meters.

There has to be a good reason to change and at the moment there isn't one.
