Olive tree advice!

Hello! I have 4 olive trees currently in pots from last year. My end aim is to have them high enough over the top of the fence for privacy. I am aware that I’ll need to transport these into larger pots to promote growth but my main question is would it be worth trying to plant them directly into the ground? Only problem I’ll be faced with here is that the whole garden is on top of thick packed hardcore laid for the artificial grass.
Is larger pots the way forward or are there other options?

They appear to be growing well, but I think as you say you are going to need much bigger containers soon.

I've found olives are pretty fast growing when planted out but difficult to say how well they will do unless you can make sure that the hard core is well broken and the roots can get through it.

Without out giving your exact location which part of the country you in ... as you are aware olives are a Mediterranean plant and depending on the severity of the winter may survive.
The fence will give protection from cold winds etc but if the plants get above the the fence may not have the protection and may suffer...

Why not dig a test whole and see what depth the hardcore is as in the long term would be best planted in the ground.

 

Hi guys. Thanks for the replies. As it happens I came across some ideal containers this morning so I have replanted them just now! Didn’t realize they needed protection but hey ho we will see what happens over the years!

 

They should be good in those for a couple of years, but if you start seeing signs of stress, like leaf loss or poor growth you might have to bite the bullet and plant them out.
Olives can suffer, mainly freezing winds, but on the whole they are a lot hardier than is often thought IMO.
Although pot grown plants will always suffer more in cold spells.
