If you want to be able to charge your car at a higher/faster rate you would need three phase installed.

I wonder what the true cost savings actually are when using these designated charging points and stations? The programme I watched the presenter had issues with these street charging points, he actually did not get a charge at two points, but he pointed out that it could of been an error on his behalf with the App. However, he was all for these designated charging stations as it was touch screen payment with rapid chargers, but there was no mention of cost.

So how much will these designated charging stations cost us, they will probably be on all motorways and major roads where traffic volumes are high. There is supposed to be a designated station just across the border in to Scotland from us, I think it is at Gretna Green services. Apparently it is a German company, IONITY 350kw super fast chargers @ 69pence per kwh.

My two trucks were both out today a nice bill of £489 for derv, so I am all for an environmentally cheaper form of transport but I do think those who don't have access for home charging will probably end up paying far more than they are lead to believe.

This was reported by the BBC some years ago.

The dystopian lake filled by the world’s tech lust - BBC Future

The problem I have is, there is a tendency to blame the far east for all our problems. China burns the most fossil fuels, true, but with a huge population and western companies farming out manufacturing there, then what do people expect. We blame them for the oceans full of plastic, yet western countries have been shipping waste plastic and other waste there for years.

The West is the problem, we farm out manufacturing to countries where labour is cheap and health and safety is lax or non existent, all to line the pockets of share holders.

Even on channel 4 dispatch's the other week, a reporter unveiled child labour in the cadbury supply chain.

But then again is it our fault entirely, they took the money for accepting our waste, they also sell us all the cheap produce their factories turn out.
Lots of people out there making big money off of the backs of workers getting poor wages.

If they paid their workers similar wages to here they would lose the financial advantage and have lots of people with no work.

Big corporations dictate wages by what they pay you for the goods. Even in the UK, watchdog and other organisations that monitor supermarkets put the blame of costs and shrinkflation at the door of the retailer and not the grower or manufacturer.

I put six lads through a forklift course as all there certificates had expired @ £220 each, two of those lads have to go through another forklift course this coming Friday as they drive demountable forklifts, these certificates only last 3 years. There will not be anywhere like the same regs in the far east like there is here, if a worker has to be safely trained, then we shouldn't be importing goods from countries where the same practise is not observed.

No. I had a dual tariff meter which gave me cheap rate electricity overnight, long before smart meters came on the scene. If I had had an EV I could have programmed the car's onboard system to do the charging during the off-peak tariff time slot (If I had a long enough cable seeing as I lived at the top of a block of flats  ). My neighbour had her washing machine programmed to come on during the night and make use of the cheaper tariff

Actually thinking about I still have one of those, but never think to take advantage of the cheaper night rate.

They have big corporations in the Far East and they are not poor.
Sorry but you will never make me feel responsible for what goes on out there.;)

I know supermarkets tell farmers how much they are going to pay for their crops.
But then again, if our farmers put their prices up the supermarkets will just import it, which is basically what went on with manufacturing in this country, we couldn't compete with the imports.

It depends on how fast a charger you need and what the capacity of your current single-phase supply is. I have a 100A supply so I could have a 7Kw charger that will charge a car in about 4 hours. If you want a 22Kw charger you need 3 phase.

              Agree.

But if we want to charge at a faster rate and not charge at home then it will cost a lot.

Pre-Covid we used to go to the Lake District a few times a year. It's a 300 mile journey so would need charging part way there. We don't want to spend hours sitting at a charging area or paying through the nose for it. Charging times, possible cost and lack of infrastructure make that impossible - not counting the current certainty that we would not have any reasonable charging facility at our destination.

With our petrol car we can do the journey non-stop (nowadays I sometimes need a toilet stop :rolleyespink: :old:) and still arrive with half a day to enjoy ourselves. :)

We have been to Newcastle today and all together we did 208 miles which cost me £28.01 for 18.04 litres of fuel.

So £28.01 shared by 208 is 0.134p per mile. Now if we had a 2017 VW UPe we would of never got there and back on one charge. We probably would of not even done it on two charges as due to the small battery, 100 mile per charge was at best all you could achieve. Even if we had the basic new 2022 VW UPe, autocar are giving it a range of 160mile per charge, still not enough for todays run out.

Now I don't know the exact difference between a new VW UP petrol or EV but lets give the EV the benefit of the doubt and say it is 5k, lets also give it the benefit of the doubt and charging up was always free. I would break even financially after 37,314 miles, for us that would take 5 years. Well we all know the true figure will be far greater, we are never going to be able to charge for free, except for solar panel power at home, plus sooner or later we will be charged per mile to cover the loss in fuel duty.

So for me it is like the traffic light system, financially and environmentally, the lights are on red, not even close to amber. So until they start producing cars with renewable energy, then and only then will we start to cut our carbon foot print and if the cost of an EV also reduces, then the lights should turn green to purchase one.

My plan is to eventually get an EV and for the odd occasion I need something with long-range, hire a car.
Today I did a long journey, for me, 112 miles. Even the Honda e should manage that.
