Twin Walled 10mm Polycarbonate, cleaning.

We have 10mm twin walled polycarb glazing in our greenhose and some of the panels bottom breather tape have failed over the years and moss etc has grown up several inches inside the sections.

Have read some comment about blasting the moss out with an air compressor , but we do not have such a thing and even the smallest ones are £100, so probably cheaper to buy new polycarb sheets !

Can only think of immersing the bottom of the panel in a bleach solution to kill of the moss, though some debris will remain.

Does anyone know of a better way to clean them out ?

 

I have the same problem so I'll keep an eye on the thread. I'm just wondering if a cheap airbed type pump would have enough umph,? I have one somewhere and I can remember attaching some tube from an aquarium air pump to it and using it for something, but for the life of me I can't remember what for and if it worked.

 

Test tube brush with bleach or Citrox solution.

 

Treat yourself to an air compressor, they are so useful.

 

Pressure washer or even a jet from a hose pipe.
I seal the ends with silicon, can look a bit untidy though.

 

Hmmm,.... but are the little £100 ones you can see in many places worth it / have enough force, or do you really need to spend a lot more ?

Can see that would work @pete, though expect you would end up being half drowned trying to aim the jet down those little channels !
Think it would need a hot dry day or two for all the channels to dry out afterwards before resealing ?

One of the short door panels is filling with moss so might try your idea out on that ... the roof ones (lean to) are 2.6 mtrs long.

 

Hot dry days, we have lots of them coming up.

 

There's a tape that you can use to seal the ends, you can get it from Screwfix. I don't remember what it's called but you could look at their website.

 

For a really tight fisted approach, a bamboo cane with a lump of sponge tied round it. Soak the sponge in whatever solution you like, I use white vinegar 'cos i don't like the smell of bleach!
Mind you don't end up pushing the bits of moss further up...it happens

 

Yes, its called Closure / Breather tape which should, so they say, be breather at one end and closed at the other.

Most, like our original tapes are basically perforated aluminium tape and rather delicate.
Just received some new breather tape which seem to be more of a fabric type so might not damage as easily.

Had chance to get the pressure washer out and gave a small panel a blast.

Took some time to clean it all out but did work well as @pete mentioned.
Think the water method would be better than an air compressor as it helps soften the residue.

The new breather tape seem so much stronger than the aluminium one and looks neater too.
