Hi everyone...my toms ( GC bought ) are currently switching between a windowsill during the night and a sunny bench during the day.

The toms are in 15cm pots and are about 20cm tall, so would the 30 degree temperature in the greenhouse be too much for them at this early stage?

    Ta very much.

Are you sure that's the right temp in your greenhouse??? If it is then you should ventilate it as that sort of heat will kill many plants! Outside in the open air they could probably take it with little or no trouble but then the air is moving around & they would probably have access to more water.

Hi Balc...the digital max / min thermometer was showing 30 degrees as a max reading today with the 3 roof vents and 2 louvres open, admittedly the door was closed, but that would be left open if there were plants in there during the day, the regular thermometer was reading about 26 degrees.

          Hi everyone

Now have a greenhouse for tomato growing, am going to try ring culture for the first time, I have some J Arthur Bowers reusable/recyclable rings. Any advice on what size gravel I should use in the trays please?

          Thanks
          Tink

30c is high and I'm getting the same temperature inside mine at the moment even with door and vents fully open. I have to put shading up in the summer which helps a bit. At this time of year all my seedlings come out the greenhouse on sunny days, they then get direct sunlight and cooler temperatures. Otherwise they can get leggy and frazzled inside.

Tomatoes can take up to 35c but above that will affect their growth and may kill them

Don't think it matters that much but probably go for smaller gravel as the roots find their way in for a drink.

Amazingly high temp! Ours are hardly much above 23-4 with vents etc open. Had new openers fitted recently and they seem to be working well! Door has to be open to satisfy me I'm taking care of the plants!

If the sun comes out I open the door and the vents all open automatically at this time of the year.
First job most sunny mornings, open fully cold frame and doors on both green houses, even the one with the cacti in it.

I remember those days !!! Don't know what it is these days though. My wife has taken over much of my work as I have to sit down more. (Oh what a shame, poor old man!) And I have to force myself to CHECK. So I look at the garden, check the sun, look at the door of the cons/greenhouse, before asking in a loud voice, " How hot is it in the conservatory?". These days I get, "those openers are working well, bit warm so I've opened the door", which of course I can see open! Look I'm basically idle! Aren't I ????

It gets very hot on our patio too, around 25c today as there is a cooling breeze. It's been over 30c in the last fortnight. My greenhouses will have some natural shading soon, there are some mature deciduous trees just about to leaf up, that helps.

The smaller greenhouse still has bubble wrap insulation which doesn't help as the vents are obstructed. Once all fear of frost goes the insulation will come out.

You could also look at clay pebbles

I've only ever used a few clay pebbles in pots to make them lighter to move. Can you buy them in big bags at a reasonable price then @Loofah ?
