Hi everyone, my neighbour has this growing in a dark corner at the top of the garden, the 5 leaves on picture 1 are about the same size as rhubarb leaves the lower leaves a lot smaller and looks like it may soon be in flower, I haven't got a clue what it is. 20220427_144153.jpg 20220427_144211.jpg

White or pinkish buds, @mazambo? Not Anemone japonica, is it?

Yes it does, I just thought his neighbour might remember and I think the flower stalks/buds start forming quite early, I know mine's flowering period has extended (in both directions) slightly as it has established.

Thanks for the correction and photo. I always simply assumed they were like my plant's leaves, but seeing them close up shows just how different they are!

@mazambo Poorly lit I'm afraid, but I've posted this photo of a leaf from my anemone for comparison. Only thing that is peculiar to me is your description of the leaf size as "about the same size as rhubarb leaves", but I note that leaves on mine in shade are about 1/3rd larger than the rest, so the largeness of your neighbour's could be due to lack of light. (?) :dunno:

Is it just me who thinks Japanese anemone has a distinctive smell when you crush a leaf or stem.

Yeah, just tried it @pete. Maybe more with stem than leaf, but it's quite subtle. Trouble is, don't think it would help identify it unless you were already familiar with the scent. :noidea:

Looking at the picture, bottom left there are some yellowish leaves, if this is the same plant it looks to me like some kind of climbing vine.
                Almost like hops.

20220428_135202.jpg 20220428_135026.jpg Ok apologies looks like I've been misleading you, I'm in touching distance from the back of my shed and the top leaves aren't as big as they seemed yesterday and the flowers as i thought they were are only new leaves growing. the plant is hidden away bottom right.
