On one of my walks I noticed these yellow flowers. Not sure if they're weeds or not, but they look very pretty.
    Anyone know what these are?

Looks to me like it might be some type of Brassica plant in flower. Could it be oil seed rape (Brassica napus)?

I drove past a couple of fields of it today, such a pungent smell to it.

Surrounded by it right now. In full flower too. Might have to jump the fence and grab some to make oil. :stirpot:

A horrid crop in my opinion. Was all around me in Bucks ...I couldn't breathe. It started my allergies in my 40s.

It does make my eyes sore when I drive passed lots of it in sunshine.

We might not be seeing so much of it in the future as they were saying on country file it is becoming uneconomic to grow due to the withdrawal of certain pesticides.

So what will happen is we will just import the oil from countries that don't have the restrictions that we do.
I presume that is Russia and Ukraine. Yeah. :frown:

I think there were EU subsidies for growing it, so with the withdrawal of those farmers will have to think again. Personally, it cannot go soon enough for me.

The price of rape oil has gone up quite sharply due to the reduction in sunflower seed oil from Ukraine and Russia. Manufacturers are switching to rape oil especially as Indonesia has banned the export of palm oil.
Rape is becoming harder to grow due to flea beetle and the withdrawal of neonics; breeders are responding by starting to develop flea beetle resistant varieties, the same goes for sugar beet.
