Standing, looking out of my window looking at the miserable weather. I thought of a saying of my mum's. If she spotted a patch of blue in a cloudy sky she'd say..........enough to make a sailors collar there!

 

Can I regenerate this subject as me and the OH are unsure of a sowing rhyme which I remember as a kid. It went something like" One for the Farmer and one for the ground and one for the fairy who takes????........ cannot seem to finish it or get the rhyming right. Could somebody help please?

 

I don't know that one but my father always sowed 4 kidney beans together at the base of the bean sticks and he used to say ...
"One for the mouse
One for the crow,
One to rot
And one to grow"

Me too Jocko. I had a look on the web yesterday but couldn't track it down.

 

My late parents were reared in London so there's quite a few sayings that I've picked up from them, some of which are now taboo. One I still use from time to time is - as black as Newgate's knocker- referring to the large, black knocker on Newgate Prison many years ago. Used since when referring to a very dark night or room for instance....or even a dirty child.

 

Pronounced Newgits Knocker I think.

I only know "One for the crow, one to rot, and one to grow" Which rhymes and is short enough to answer a child's "Why" without raising many follow up questions.
