Much though I admire your sentiment the water you don't use is not being shipped off to sub-Saharan Africa or any place else that needs water. I use tap water on my plants but donate to Water Aid. That way I feel my use of water is not extravagant.

The way i see it, I can't do much for people in other countries that don't have water. Like in Brazil they're going to run out of water sometime but they still cut down their rain forest that will cause climate change across the world and people digging up their front garden just to put a car on it, 2 have gone in these last few weeks.

Thanks @Jocko , good to see you get actively involved, we donate to Water Aid too.:) :dbgrtmb:

Yes of course I fully agree that any water I don't use doesn't benefit those people in need in other countries.
Likewise people saying that they can't do or change things ,still doesn't sit right with me. I can't justify using the world's most precious and important commodity in such a selfish way...that is me personally. I would rather my unused water go to areas directly in need of it here on my own doorstep. It's very much needed in the agricultural sector for one thing.
It's no good looking at what our neighbours are doing wrong....we have to look closer to home and do right ourselves. If everyone did their bit and save a bit on water wastage.....if everyone joined forces in a combined effort, what a better better world we'd have.
When all is said and done there are no excuses, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem we all have a part to play. :)

I agree ... but that is a mighty big IF which we can only dream about.

Sorry just seen the reference to the deforestation of the rainforest!! Your part could in supporting the people who desperately need the work, ensuring you avoid all palm oil etc, etc. The list is endless, you just have to be bothered enough to look.

Vicky sadly I have to agree, it seems a shame that it's become such a huge IF and that people don't see it as they're automatic responsibility to leave this world in a better condition than they found it in.

and just how many people enriched that water before the garden got it :thud:

I use rain barrel water as much as possible but do have to admit that city water does the bulk of the watering over the summer.

Everyone has their own ways of doing things. Re dishwashing:- as mentioned before, the research done by Which? says that using a dishwasher, full up, uses a considerable amount less water than washing by hand - but that is only a drop in the ocean

We can't collect the water from our shower and bath as we live in a bungalow and the pipes run under the floor into the drains but from most houses (not ours) that water should be going back into the system with little wastage. I'm not able to carry buckets of water anyway so that would be a no no for me.

On a more practical level, there is plenty of water in the world (it's not disappearing) it's just in the wrong place and as the ice cap melts the problem is getting worse and our country is in serious danger of coastal erosion. As @Jocko mentioned, they have more than enough up his way and it should not be beyond the wit of the water companies to be able to pipe it down this way. Also, according to reports, 3.1 billion litres of water are lost every day through leaks - both from home and water authority. Water companies have improved their leakage repair in the last decade but, apparently, loss of water from home leaks hasn't changed much. According to Direct Line a leak of one drip per second can increase your water bill by 6% and 460 million litres of water are lost each year by dripping taps!!!

I currently have a sprinkler going on my veg plot (about 2/3 of an allotment). Most of the plot is covered by a porous fabric so that the water seeps through and the fabric helps prevent evaporation. It's an efficient way of using the necessary water. I never water the lawns and only water plants that need it.

I'm not sure that the argument about thinking of people in drought circumstances can, alone, be a good reason for conserving water but contributing to a relevant charity can be of assistance. I remember back to the campaign about the starving children in Biafra and they were saying to kids at school that they should think of the poor starving children in Biafra and make sure they ate all their dinner (school dinners were compulsory in those days) and the children looking very puzzled and wanted to know how that would help them! (By the way, I volunteered in the Biafran Airlift and the situation there was awful.)

We all do what we can in our own way and getting uptight about what others on here do, or don't do, is unnecessary.

I happen to do lots of charity work (have been doing it for 65 years) but that doesn't mean to say that everyone should do it.

True @shiney but I did acknowledge the point about conserving water here wouldn't directly effect drought areas, I said I would rather it get to needy areas within my locality.

When all is said and done it comes down to personal consciousness....

My bug bear is this ... Algarve is a small Province and there are nearly 50 golf courses watering their lawns rain or shine. They have boreholes taking it from the substructure of the earth which affects land far from their space. Do they care the country is in a desperate situation ... not one iota! I don't believe that those hundreds of thousands of golfers care about conserving water wherever they come from ... and if they do, they are hypocrites in my opinion.

Some non-essential agricultural businesses have been told to cut back. I don't know what the Governments view is on golf courses.
