@JWK yes lol, there is a "tomato a". I collected the seed from two tomatoes at the end of last year. One Cherokee purple and one a dolly parton. However, I forgot to label the two dishes. Hence tomato a and tomato b. I can re-label the packets once I know what either one of them is. So although technically I don't have a tomato a, I do have the tomato a seed. And I have other strains of dolly Paxton and Cherokee purp!e growing.

You really need to water the floor and soil to get the humidity up, it's not just a quantity of water, but you have to get it to evaporate; humidity being the "amount" of water vapour in the atmosphere.
Random thought: a solar powered fountain would encourage evaporation.

Glasshouses in Spain; I think it's to give them control of the conditions just like growing strawberries and raspberries in polytunnels over here. All the plants are growing in the same medium, being watered and fed the same, you can use biological controls more easily, you avoid bird damage and probably reduce caterpillar problems. Also heavy rain, hail stones won't damage the crop and they should ripen together.
In Italy and Spain growing outdoors in gardens the varieties grown will have been selected down the generations to thrive in the heat.

@NigelJ Hi, if you have not seen it, take a look here

            satellites.pro/Spain_map#36.727118,-2.736379,12

I can't paste the https bit as only been registered a day... (Admin: have changed to a URL link)

Horrible, but suppose we all want to eat fresh pepper, tomatoes and salads all year round....

My friend is still losing most of the fruits in her greenhouse. The outdoor toms are doing really well. IMG_20220623_110951.jpg IMG_20220623_111021.jpg

I wonder what size containers your friend is using @eatenbyweasels - maybe not large enough for a decent sized root ball to keep the plant hydrated?

They are in 20 litre tubs, but maybe only filled to 15 litres. The plants outside are in the same sized tubs or smaller and are not affected.

Looking back on previous Tomato pics mine are at least 12" to 18" shorter this season and not as many fruits developing.
Runner Beans are doing well though. Funny old game this gardening lark.

Pan out, and most of the foliage is lush.

That's bigger than mine (at 11 litres) but I have sunk them into the soil and the roots can escape to help keep hydrated, that's the only thing I can think of. Are your friend's on soil too?

                      @john558 Hi john,

It seems true with mine too.

                      IMG_20210618_191443_hdr_kindlephoto-235746899.jpg
                      June 18th last year

This year I trimmed the asparagus, it was over 7 foot last year, just to tidy it a bit. Now, I have amended the soil a bit to bring down the PH, and I started the seedlings off a little later and planted out a little later. But, I do think there is slightly lesser growth at this point than last year. I suppose time will tell, the tomatoes themselves seem to be coming on fine and like the kid in class who always seems to grow to six foot way before the others, the others catch up soon enough. When you garden outside, the weather is king I guess.

Hers are on gravel, but she's an avid waterer. The outdoor ones are on concrete.
