ADMIN NOTE - THIS APPLIES TO EVERYONE.

Following a report, the admin team have discussed things at length - whilst we have no desire to quash discussion and we feel it important that people should be allowed to speak freely and give their opinion, please be careful and write with sensitivity when we are referring to someone's race/culture/origins.

There is no problem to say that you feel someone taking such a position should be pro-UK and preferably born and bred in the UK, but there is nothing to be gained from referencing their country of origin or race.

Well there you go, who was it who mentioned Romans, Normans, Angles, Saxons, the Vikings, Picts and Celts.

Your second paragraph literally negates what you claim in your first one, @Fat Controller.

Irrelevant, and to be honest not really right to call anyone a weirdo. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, everyone is entitled to disagree or even be offended by others opinions and I will defend to death everyone's right to be able to voice their opinions as long as it is done so within the law and applicable rules.

          Rule 10:
          10. NO FLAMING OR AD HOMINEM ATTACKS:: No member is allowed to make personal attacks on any other member or of the Admin Team. Criticise ideas, not people. Personal attacks are defined as Personal, Racial, Ethnic, and/or Gender based insults, slurs, or derisive comments. This includes spite reporting or other similar forms of harassment via private messages or anything similar.

The Admin team chose to take a lenient approach to this, not least because @noisette47 is a long standing, valued member, but also because we do genuinely believe that there is validity in discussing concerns of this nature; indeed, I personally hold the view that there has been insufficient discussion around certain issues (such as those arriving by dinghy, or even child sexual exploitation in Rotherham) purely because people were scared of being called racist; I believe that it is important that we are able to hold our own beliefs and even voice them, to a point... but, I do not own this site, I merely volunteer along with the others to keep it ticking over and uphold the rules.

The alternative to the path we have chosen is a simple, but blunt one that would guarantee discussions of this nature stifled - it starts with a delete button and goes from there.

I urge everyone to please heed the above warning and respect the decision we have made as I can assure you it was made with leniency and fairness firm and centre. Let's not explore those alternative actions.

OK, I am going to give my final answer on this - my next move is to lock the thread and delete all offending posts.

Go and read the rules please, refer specifically to rule 10 and rule 15.

The rules of the site are there to be respected and upheld. Nobody is holding a gun to anyone's head to use the forum, but those that wish to do so must abide by the rules.

Please show a little respect Nick. We often find ourselves put to make hard decisions on interpreting rules of the forum and maintaining balance as best we can.
Plenty of members create reports; they are your fellow members and they do so out of concern for the forum and maintaining standards.
We have 5 admins and thousands of members so frankly we appreciate the help. Calling them weirdos because they express concerns is poor form.

Personally I would state my concern, on the forum, to the person concerned before reporting someone's post.

Admirable @pete, but often times that can lead to conflict, albeit unintended.

Probably just me but i hate it when off topic discussions move on to divisions when we're here together for our love of gardening. Like them or not (and yes i have firm views on lots of things) i accept the mods have outside influences that govern the running of the forum so i accept their rulings. When I'm posting i do my upmost to be polite. When i see a post being unanswered i do my best to try and answer it with my limited knowledge because i thought that's what it's all about.

@noisette47 , I hope you don't get into too much trouble in keeping your plants alive

More seriously, I'm a child of third generation foreigners in Finland. My Great grandparents moved in in late 1800's and we are still foreigners thanks to our names, second language (now dying out in younger generations), and culture.

In Helsinki I can point out the house my Grandmother was born in, recite the history of my Grandfather's business (rather unfortunately named, thinking of it- sauerkraut and pickled cucumbers are great but as cabbage means both a cabbage and a head and a cucumber means both the fruit and the throat the brothers could have spent some time in the PR department. Not going into details here. ) Yet, I'm still a foreigner in my homeland.

In the same way, my friend of Indian origin is still a foreigner here where her parents were born and where she has lived all her life.

I think that an extra culture is a bonus, it gives perspective. It must be more challenging for a child of a monocultural background to take on a job where they are expected to interact and build relations globally. Having a starting point of multiculturality can be a great asset.

And certainly the next generation will be more flexible. My daughter (born to parents from two different countries in a third country, whisked to UK at 6), answered to the consensus question of her ethnicity with a shrug and "Dunno". It just doesn't matter to her where she's from. :)

Well my moan for today is that it was an absolutely gorgeous day and I had to miss half of it due to work.

Oh, and another moan, I hate avatars that rudely point at me. I was taught that was a gesture most gauche!

When I was a lad... we used to get a clump round the ear if we pointed at someone close by. Nowadays pointing is allowed but clumping a kid round the ear isn't! How times have changed
