Mrs Shiney drove past a petrol station yesterday that was selling petrol at £1.66. :rolleyespink:

I went to my local Tesco today, in Dalkeith, and was shocked to pay 192.9p per litre for E5 (£8.77/gallon). I was also shocked earlier when I went to my local Asda and they only sell E10.
Mind you, the biggest surprise of the day was when I worked out my fuel consumption and found that my old Jazz had achieved 55 mpg doing city driving. Okay, I don't drive in rush hour but that figure really amazed me. Must be down to the warm weather we have had over the past couple of months.

I never noticed the Asda price as I was too busy looking for an E5 pump and I didn't register the E10 price in Tesco. That tankful should keep me going until about October!

Hi Jocko, do you really need E5 for your Jazz? E10 is the petrol that can normally be used for everything except high performance engines.

E5 is for performance engines and also if you do very few miles Harry. E10 has a much shorter shelf life (3 months?), once it goes in your tank the air gets to it and it absorbs water. I had miss-firing and stuttering with E10 going off as I only fill up my old classic every few months, when syphoned out and replaced with E5 it ran Ok. I've since heard E10 can damage carbs if left overwinter in lawnmowers and the like, although my lawnmower was Ok last winter before I realised this might cause problems.

Some of the newer petrol mowers are supposed to be able to run happily on E10.

They reckon with the drop in oil prices, mainly due to OPEC increasing production we should be paying about £1.65 / £1.70 per litre

In our area and going by some of the reply's, supermarkets have been the most expensive. The most I have paid was £1.86.9p at our local BP garages while the supermarkets were charging £1.95.9p

The supermarkets in our area have reduced the price significantly over the last 2 weeks to £1.80.9p still more than BP, Jet, Shell and Texaco are charging, why?

My old mower runs fine on the E10 siphoned out of my miss-firing classic. The problem may come over winter in that it can damage and gunge up the mower carb. If you use the mower over winter then it should be ok, mine goes in the shed untouched for 4+ months so I shall try to remember to empty the fuel out prior. Maybe newer mowers are not susceptible to gunging :rolleyespink:

Back on topic, yesterday i noticed prices have dropped around 5p litre around here from the high.

The Jazz will run happily on E10 but it runs smoother on 97 RON though the improved mpg never justified me regularly using 97 RON in the past. However, now that I fill the car up so infrequently (yesterday it was still above half a tank left and that was since filling up in May) and because of the reasons JWK relates, I decided to use E5. Because I buy so little petrol, price is not really a budgetary constraint. I am currently averaging less than 5 miles a day and probably only use the car about 2 days a week.
I have used 97 RON in the mower since buying it, just to make for easy starting and because I leave the fuel in all winter.

I never knew that petrol has such a short shelf life.
I have heard that Beer also has a shelf life, must be longer than the 72 hours it lasts on my shelf.

Is that a big deal (genuine question)?

It's a very long time since I last worked on a carburettor, so things have no doubt changed over the years. But dismantling, cleaning and reassembling a carb used to be an easy job. Maybe 10 minutes to remove and dismantle, same for reassembly, with the longest part being soaking the jets overnight in coca cola (not Pepsi or any other brand, has to be coca cola for some reason). It dissolves all the gunk leaving shiney new looking clean metal.

As I said it's not happened to me I'm repeating what I've heard, I think you're right it's not a big deal providing you are handy and can do that sort of thing yourself.

Had our new Vauxhall corsa delivered on Wednesday, 250 miles on the clock and an empty tank. Mrs fueled up yesterday at the BP garage £1.65.9 for unleaded, she said that diesel was £1.76.9, the guy who delivered the car said the fuel was about 15p a litre cheaper in our area compared to Manchester where he was from.

Over the last couple of weeks unleaded has come down in our local petrol station from £1.76.9 to £1.68.9. Tesco is now down to £1.70.9. We don't use Tesco fuel anymore as our last car wouldn't run properly on it. It wasn't an old car either.
