I wonder if that's to do with the fact that once a hot tub is filled, it tends to stay that way for ages, whereas paddling pool water with no filter system quickly becomes disgusting and ends up being poured out after a few hours.

 

Cost, I think they have looked into this in the past, the pipes would need to be a least 1.5m in diameter, then the cost of energy required to pump the water.

As we all know, the West of the UK gets the most rainfall but it's also sparsely populated compared to areas like the South East. Pumping water to these areas would probably just encourage more new house builds in these drought prone areas.

 

Perhaps you've just got a lot more gardeners over there. Our newest "burbs" even have concrete down from the sidewalk down to the street which leaves even less lawn for rain to feed so they have compensated by having large holding ponds at all these developments. And I see no uprising for that water to be pumped back out for lawns/gardens.

Lots worry about appearances as far as the front patch goes, but the back, nope, not a bit of concern.

Yes, we have a horribly long season that is not suitable for growing anything, but lots of numpties who don't take advantage of the good weather as well..

BTW - hot tubs usually hold about 500 gallons and if they are not chlorine sanitized, need changing fairly awesome. (had one so I DO know) A kiddie pool. How much can that hold?

Edit: And if you have a lot of large people going in to the hot tube, the amount of water displaced has to be replace...

 

My 1500 L tank is down to about 300 and I have about 80 L in a water butt. Three water butts have been cleaned and serviced. A fourth one was rinsed and scrubbed, however the next morning when I went to resite it I discovered a couple of cracks and a dent in the bottom, as if hit by a hammer so I must have caught it on a rock when emptying the last 10 L or so out of it.

 

Can only speak of what my neighbour said to me last week about his hot tub, it was filled last year and not been emptied since.
He does appear to put chemicals in on a regular basis.

My biggest concern with them would be the cost of electricity to run the pumps and heating, especially through the winter, and if you emptied it regularly the initial heat up would cost the earth.

 

Looks like they already are to some areas.

North-South pipeline aims to tackle 'water deficit'

Only in the last few weeks our water has started to come from Thirlmere. It always used to come from Ennerdale but we have had to have a mixture of bore water in the mix, which made the kettles crackle when boiling.

A 300 million pound investment for a 62 mile pipeline all to protect fresh water mussels in the river Ehen. The Nuclear site has pumped water from the Ehen plus other sources in the past. Yet when the government gave the go ahead for Toshiba to build 3 new nuclear reactors, they decide to build a new pipeline, coincidence?

 

I think rather than planning a pillaging trip up north to pilfer our last dregs of water, I think we should all do our best to minimise our water demands as much as possible. I'm not waiting for the hosepipe ban to reach us up here for example.

There's an article in the BBC news today about the threat to aquatic wildlife, which I think I'd already mentioned on here somewhere yesterday.

I remember a drought when I was a kid, and through the TV, we were all rallied into action then to reduce water usage. I think we should be doing that now but there seems to be less of a united spirit now than there was back then.

It was on the news a few days ago, our neighbours in France are already ahead of us in terms of crisis, with the actual water mains running dry in certain areas. We need to try to prevent that happening here, and unless anyone knows how to organise a rain dance, I think the best we can do right now is really try to limit our water use.

 

My moan is people who water their Grass in drought areas, you know who you are

 

I find that people who do not have a professional lawn sprinkler system have not idea about the difference in the amount of water distributed by them compared to a sprinkler at the end of a hose.

And immense amount gets dispersed by these heads and I find that more than 12 or so minutes per zone provides a thorough, deep soaking.

We don't have a water shortage at the moment and I do stop my system when there is an alert or , of course, if rain is coming.

I don't have dogs. Just visiting skunks and rabbits.

 

Just had coal man bring our coal, i must be getting old as it took a few minutes longer to stack in the garage, coal man came at 1.10pm left at 1.20pm just drop off the side of lorry, then 23 minutes to stack into garage it used to take 16 minutes, it just not good enough Jiffy pull you socks up 50bags at 25kg well i'm going to blame the weather as it made me sweat

 

I shouldn't think so, you've got bloody great lake about the size of England just down the road.
