Tomato Growing Thread 2022

Hi i have grown cherry tumbling toms for 2 years with plenty of tomotoes i gave some to my freinds
they need a good soaking daily i use big not small baskets i hang them on the fence concrete posts using brackets one tomotoe plant to a basket it works for me i have grown them in pots even growbag but it seems the basket variety is better maybe if i had a big garden i would have them in pots or greenhouse
The only monstrous veg i have grown in a growbag was a pumpkin it was massive the garden centre gave me that plant instead of courgette but soon i discovered thats not surly a courgette but they need a lot of water a bucket 2 or 3 times a day so watering tomotoes not so bad but no more pumpkin lol

 

@Ademission bit of a mystery to me, just attached picture of truss size and looks like cherry to me rather than beefsteak, also very regular in size and shape. I wonder if f the seed was crossed. Anyhow, I shall plant some of the new seed and if there is variation I'll know they weren't OP in the first place. All my early saved seed has been hand pollinated so shouldn't have introduced any cross fertilisation.

 

I am going away for a week and my toms will have to fend for themselves! Whopping great caprese salad today for an early lunch, toms were cherokee purple, azoychka and sevryuga.

Wow, what a tomato. Twice the weight of my biggest Black Russian and I thought my tomato was big!

We've never grown beefsteak with success but that was all before we took things a bit more seriously so maybe next year would be a good time to have another go. I'd be interested to get some suggestions of the better beefsteaks from the tomato experts.

@Ademission Not quite the show stopper that @JWK has with the buffalosun but these have to come in as rain is expected. Rain will expand and split the larger ripening ones, the green ones should be fine I hope.

The barbastro is my current favourite.

 

@Ademission This was the first dolly parton this year at 477 grams

But not as pretty. They can all get larger still if you choose only fused blooms and remove other fruit to maximise size BUT then you give up tasty tomatoes for Frankenstein tomatoes. I think they are nicer left to their own devices as @JWK buffalosun shows

They look fantastic. Thanks a lot for suggesting your favourites. It's all noted and we will look out for seeds ready for next season. We try to experiment each year with new varieties whilst always growing a few of our favourites.

My wife is the tomato enthusiast while I am the chili geek.

@Hanglow I am loving oxhearts this year too, see you have picked some there. What type are they ?

 

@Ademission there's a place for all types of tomato. All depends on your space, there are some beautiful and rich tasting dwarfs and equally across the spectrum. The only ones I can't do are the determinates, too bushy and one big load at once. But if you dehydrate, or preserve in other ways they are great. Then you can rip up and regrow something else. There is no one tomato that fits all needs, a well grown tomato is the best type of tomato, whatever the genetics.
