Apart from a profusion of smaller birds (they get through 25kg of seed every five weeks) we have our larger birds.

Pheasants wander round our garden and aren't bothered by us - as long as we don't get too close

And we now have a resident Red Kite. He spends a lot of his day preening himself in the top of a tree down the garden and now comes down to greet me if I wave my arm in the air. He knows that's the sign that I'm throwing out scraps from our meals. He flies down, circles around me at about rooftop level and waits for me to go away. Then he swoops in and grabs it from the ground whilst in flight.

We were amused last evening by this Carpenter Bee trying trying to extract something from this bell ... right next to Plumbago, Iochroma and Hibiscus blooms ...

@shiney the pheasants here are looking really scruffy at the moment - moulting badly. Lovely to see your adopted Kite. :)

@Sheal the male pheasant is only just regrowing his tail but our pheasants are doing OK because they get plenty of feed dropped by the smaller birds and come regularly to the patio for their bowl of water.

The kite is a magnificent creature and he swoops around the garden quite often. People don't realise how big he is until they see him close up in flight.

:yikes: T'other Half took it and said Cicada and I said are you sure. Apologies!

The Cicadas are singing at the moment though.

The young kite has now taken to perching in the tree next to the parent. :blue thumb: His wing span is only about 3' (a guess). They both like chicken wings and had a half each. They didn't share but I broke it in two before throwing the pieces on the lawn. :)

Not much to look at really but this all black duck with a yellow bill is a Common Scoter mainly a sea duck. A few spend the Winter down here but this male in exceptionally early in Poole harbour.

The Hummingbird Hawkmoth has been around all morning but when it is at rest and a strange place for it, you can see it isn't much to look at. (Hopefully next I'll see real Hummingbirds again)

Your description of the Red Kite's feeding habits reminded me of watching the feeding of the Kites at Creggin Farm in Mid Wales. When we there last there were probably close to a 100, as well as a few herons and buzzards!! It may well be the same feeding method in all mass feeding spots. Perhaps your kite has fed at one and thus associates humans as feeders? Just think you're very lucky!! Good on you!!!
