I got to thinking this morning about just how I would be able to explain 'acidity' in soil to a child. I got as far as 'well acidity is a measure of pH, which is how err..acid or alkaline the soil is...er...'
Which is no use to anyone. So I figured a thread started now to describe gardening term to children will help me in several years when mine is old enough to be digging the veg patch.

I skipped the whole acid/alkaline/pH approach, and tackled it by explaining to my son that the plants find the food in the soil, and some plants don't like some flavours so they need different kinds of soil. Blueberry bushes don't like the kind of soil that most plants like, and most plants don't like blueberry soil.

I just spoke to a little girl who had no idea strawberries came from a plant and was shocked when I told her I grow them.

I seem to forget how little children know.

The biggest problem our population has is believing food comes from Asda !

        (Other supermarkets are available.....)

I remember a friend telling me how his young daughter became vegetarian.

Apparently she came home from school one day and proclaimed with horror, 'daddy, chicken is made out of chickens!

True, but it cracked me up.
